Vista x64 Shutdown Problem

I recently added a new hard drive to my system to give me a bit more storage room. All drives in the system are SATA, 2x Raptor 36GB, 1 Plextor DVD burner, and the new Samsung 250GB. The Raptors are currently not in a RAID.

My question is.. What occurs during Vista shutdown? It may give me some more insight into my problem.

During shutdown, the new drive gets thrashed for 3-5 minutes before the system drive updates config and shuts down. Could this be some sort of conflict with the controller? Raptors are SATA 150 and the Samsung is 300. Is Vista writing a system restore to that drive at shutdown? (A friend theorized that, and it sounded logical enough)

Any thoughts or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Thanatos420,
The only thing I can think of is look at your power options. I noticed on my default install of Vista it would turn power to my second drive off after a few minutes of idle. Drove me nuts so I changed that to never. This may or may not help. :)

Yea, that was annoying also! Hehe. I already had 2 drives in the system before the Samsung drive, and got the same thing you did. Had power options set to never turn off hard disk before I installed the Samsung. Thanks for the suggestion though! :)

I kept hearing my drive click and im thinking what the heck is that?? Then it dawned on me. I'm stumpted on your issue though. :o Maybe turn off system restore for grins?

My shutdown time went from 20 seconds or less to about 2 minutes right after I installed Nero. Don't know if that was coinsidence or what. I have two 74gig raptors in raid 0 and a 4gig flash drive (F). For that two minutes the shutdown screen is on the hdd activity led on the case and the flash drive station led stay lit. It was like it was indexing or something. Anyway after a new mb and a fresh format/reinstall of os, I am once again enjoying a speedy shutdown. Of course I haven't installed any cd/dvd burning software either. One may have nothing to do with the other also.

Exactly what I experienced Jax. However, I guess the HD at 250g took a little longer to "index". I guess I'll just keep trying different things. I'll let you know if I discover anything.
