For some reason, when i start using explorer the system starts to take a long time to load anything and gets stuck on the loading cursor.. pretty soon it requires me to hard-reboot the computer. This also occurs when i am trying to install software.

Running:-

core 2 X6800
2gb corsair (something)
2x nvidia 7900gtx

Have a look in your error logs and give us an idea of what it says. They can be found by clicking on start, right click on computer and open manage.

thanks for your help guys, found out what it was; my old 320gb HDD is now a paperweight. I started getting suspicious when i was able to copy data between my 3 500gb's at a relativly high speed and with no issues but whenever data was being written to the system disk it would freeze then crash. i have since installed a new 320gb HDD and Vista and have not had a problem since.

Another week of this performance and i dont think ill ever install XP again.

Just because your old drive was failing under vista does not mean it was vistas fault. Was it taken from an older computer using a different os. If it was then you will need to backup the data and reformat it using vistas ntfs. Old drives do work with vista but vista does not like the filing system of older os`s. Also check the old drive for problems, a reformat and chkdsk may get it working again.

shadowblade,
your scarin me man...exactly what kind of HDD was it?...jus curious because i got a 320 gb one too..mines a ST3320620AS
Western Digital WD32 00AAKS-00VYA Scsi Disk Device.
it was a 2 and a half year old hard drive that had been absolutely thrashed in my old computer.

Just because your old drive was failing under vista does not mean it was vistas fault. Was it taken from an older computer using a different os. If it was then you will need to backup the data and reformat it using vistas ntfs. Old drives do work with vista but vista does not like the filing system of older os`s. The drive as mentioned before was an older drive and i do not think it had anything to do with it needing reformatting as i had formatted, deleted the partition and repartitioned the drive under Vista's installation. It was similar to an issue i had with another hard drive under XP about a year ago; files would copy perfectly between other drives but when i wrote onto the system drive it would freeze and require a reboot. It has now been righted after i slapped in a new 320gb, so all is peachy.

I thank you for all your guys help! :D

*ur... didnt have vista a year ago.. haha
