WMP problems among other things

Hi all! Have an e-machine Vista Home Basic. About a week ago, I could not open WMP any more by just clicking the icon. I found that I could right click it and open with 'run as administrator'. At the same time I could no longer open Napster. It told me I didn't have a recent version of WMP, which I do.

I have McAfee installed and I can no longer see the menu when I click that icon. Also had issues with internet explorer. Problems that I don't have with Moxilla.

I found that if I turn off User Account Control that all works fine. Of course I get a warning for not having that on. The real kicker is that none of these problems occur on my guest account even with UAC on.

I've been searching Google and came upon this forum. Do I need to change a setting somewhere? Thank's for any help.

Re: WMP problems among other things

Jetts,
Friend of mine bought a new E machine and it came with Vista Home Basic. They also had funky issues like these and the only thing they did was uninstall that Mcafee crap off their Emachine then rebooted and it cleared everything up.

You can use free anti-virus software like Avast from avast! antivirus software - computer virus, worm and Trojan protection by ALWIL Software. Also free anti-spyware/adware called SypbotSD 1.5 works well on vista 32/64 bit.

The thing is, I've had McAfee installed since I got this last May and these problems problems didn't occur until a week or so ago. Being a newbie, I paid for a year of Security Suite and I'm reluctant to uninstall it. I kind of like the Site Advisor.

I'll wait for some other suggestions before I go that route. Thanks for your response, though. I think I'm going to learn a lot in this forum.

Re: WMP problems among other things

Hi Jetts,

I have a eMachine as well that came with McAfee. I was able to download it straight from Mcafee to be able to reinstall it anytime I wanted during the subscription period. I believe you just had to register with Mcafee.

I would recommend that you try uninstalling McAfee and restart the computer as a test to see if that clears up the problems. McAfee and Norton have been known to cause issues with Vista sometimes and always with Windows Mail. If McAfee does not uninstall cleanly, then you can use the MCPR Removal Tool . It will usually work ok for a bit, then it doesn't.

Hmm... maybe I'll try that. I can't seem to find a solution to this problem. I do have the DMsetup file saved to a folder. Thanks for your reply. friend/jetts

Yes, thank you. I've done that also. The fact is that I can't open a video file automatically in WMP in my admin account but I can in my guest account.
