I can't install Windows updates, every time I try I get this error code - 80246008. All suggestions from Microsoft refers to the BITS service, but this service is not listed in services list, so I really don't know what to do and any help will be highly appreciated.

Hi pgmnls,
I think bits is listed in the services as Background Intelligent Transfer Service. Is it not th
ere? It might be set to manual. You can set it to Automatic/started :)

Hi Raj,

the problem is that Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) is not listed in services, hence I can't set the properties.

Hi Raj,

yes, it's very strange, the sytem was preinstalled on the notebook and worked fine till November, and then I noticed that automatic updates failer and tried to install manually, and then saw this error. I already tried this fix frm Microsoft, but it does not work, since BITS is not present. When I tried to apply the fix it says something like can't install since no BITS found. Don't know what to do next, I can't find a way to reinsatll this BITS.

So far I have not found or seen a way to download/install from the net or Vista DVD. I know there was a command in XP that could easily erase a service from the list but I doubt this was the case. Did you ever see BITS in the services? If so maybe you could do a system restore to restore the BITS service?

I never looked up for this BITS service before the problem happend, so I just assume it was there, since this is the only way Vista is doing updates. My only thought that one of the previous updates just wiped it out. I didn't check for corrupted files yet.
