BITS service problem

I can't install Windows updates, every time I try I get this error code - 80246008. All suggestions from Microsoft refers to the BITS service, but this service is not listed in services list, so I really don't know what to do and any help will be highly appreciated.

Re: BITS service problem

Hi pgmnls,
I think bits is listed in the services as Background Intelligent Transfer Service. Is it not th
ere? It might be set to manual. You can set it to Automatic/started

Re: BITS service problem

Hi Raj,

the problem is that Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) is not listed in services, hence I can't set the properties.

Re: BITS service problem

Strange. I thought it would be in the list right out of the Vista Box. Was this an upgrade to Vista or preinstall?

I found this MS articles on BITS for Vista. Hope this helps!

Re: BITS service problem

Hi Raj,

yes, it's very strange, the sytem was preinstalled on the notebook and worked fine till November, and then I noticed that automatic updates failer and tried to install manually, and then saw this error. I already tried this fix frm Microsoft, but it does not work, since BITS is not present. When I tried to apply the fix it says something like can't install since no BITS found. Don't know what to do next, I can't find a way to reinsatll this BITS.

Re: BITS service problem

So far I have not found or seen a way to download/install from the net or Vista DVD. I know there was a command in XP that could easily erase a service from the list but I doubt this was the case. Did you ever see BITS in the services? If so maybe you could do a system restore to restore the BITS service?

Have you done a check for corrupt system files? http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/66978-system-files.html

Re: BITS service problem

I never looked up for this BITS service before the problem happend, so I just assume it was there, since this is the only way Vista is doing updates. My only thought that one of the previous updates just wiped it out. I didn't check for corrupted files yet.

Re: BITS service problem

Yes checking the file system is good what z3r010 mentioned. After that I would run a check disk too. http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/67...isk.html?ltr=C
