Automatic resizing for programs and videos

First of all, I could not find any thread related to what I'm about to ask about, but if there's one, feel free to lock it.

Let's see, I've been using Vista for nearly 2 months now and I have a 17" laptop with 1920x1200 native resolution. I don't know how I switched that option on, but somehow Vista was able to recognize the difference between the screen size and the resolution (it's running in 1920x1200) and adapted to it... as in opening videos or some programs (not all of them), like image edition programs, not in function of the resolution but the screen size, meaning a 1:1 scale.

Unfortunately I had a hdd failure and had to replace it, and reinstall everything. It's been a few days, but I've been unable to reproduce what happened (aka everything is set to a 1920x1200 resolution).

I've checked the nvidia forums (8600m gt card), but it doesn't seen to be a feature controlled by the card.

Any suggestions? thanks for any info

This is by design. The adapter will run the highest res it can by default. Did you to go control panel > personalize > display settings and try to change the resolution there?

I've been trying to change random display options for a while without success. And the resolution has to stay in 1920x1200. That's what I liked of how it worked before: Vista running in that resolution, while somehow the os choose programs to which it was not applied...
