Forum Rules

The Vista x64 forums have grown tremendously over the last 2+ years and we thank all of you for being a part of this growing community.

In order to keep the forums running well and to prevent problems, please follow these simple rules for the forums here. If you have any questions or problems, please feel free to contact one of the Staff Members.

General Rules:
  1. While debating and discussion is fine, we will not tolerate rudeness, insulting posts, personal attacks or purposeless inflammatory posts. Our decision is final in these matters.
  2. No useless posts. This includes: Thread bumping, useless one liners, flaming, and trolling.
  3. No discussion of politics, religion or firearms - this is a technical forum and not the place for it!
  4. Multiple or repeated posting in order to increase your post count is not allowed.
  5. Advertising, spamming, and promoting your site or another website is not allowed. This includes using the forum email, Visitor and Private message system, or your signature to spam other members with this.
  6. We also do not allow posts that are sexual in nature or violate Vistax64.com community standards. The Vistax64.com team shall be the sole arbitrator of what does and what does not violate community standards.
  7. Discussion of illegal activities such as software and music piracy and other intellectual property violations are not allowed, and will automatically get you banned permanently. The discussion of methods (cracks) designed to circumvent activation and other intellectual protection technologies is also not allowed.
  8. Each member is allowed one login account. Registering with multiple accounts is not allowed.
  9. We reserve the right to remove offensive posts without notice.
  10. If you are going to post non-English on these forums, please also post an English Translation of your post.
  11. Also while these rules cover most common situations, they cannot anticipate everything. Consequently we reserve the right to take any actions we deem appropriate to ensure these forums are not disrupted or abused in any way.
  12. You cannot post any affiliate or referral links, or post anything asking for a referral. Such posts will be subject to removal.
  13. You cannot post advertisements or notices for contests. This includes classified ad types of posts as well.
  14. We also reserve the right to ban anyone who wilfully violates the forum rules, as access to our support forums are a privilege and not a right.
  15. The Admins reserve the right to mess with a members avatar and user title for their own amusement at any time.
  16. Signature must not contain any links to other tech sites or forums; unless owned by Designer Media Ltd.
  17. Do not post direct download links for programs, post links to the free program's download website instead. The program's website with more information available about it is more trusted.
  18. Articles: If an article is from another website, then it cannot be copied completely here. That would be considered plagiarism. Instead it will need to presented in a teaser format with usually only the first paragraph of the article with the link to that website's article included in your post as a "Read more at....(link)" at the bottom. Please acknowledge the source, if at all possible.
  19. Abusing the PM (Private Message) system with any of the above, or sending PMs to members for Vista related help instead of posting it in the forum.
  20. Please do not include your email address in your posts. If you wish to let someone on these forums have your address then send it to them via PM (Private Messaging), with their agreement of course. Do not have it on public view. This is for your safety, to prevent you from getting SPAM and unwanted emails.
If you feel a post violates any of these rules, or you need to bring it to the attention of a moderator (move threads/close/split), please use the report post button to notify the moderators.

Above all be polite, and if you don't have anything constructive to say, then don't bother, as a ban often offends

New User Ranks - It's all about the Rep

After along time trying to find a fair way of assigning user ranks, we have come up with the following system based on a members reputation points.
  • Skilled = 100 Rep
  • Power User = 400 Rep
  • Vista Pro = 600 Rep (Gains access to the Vista Pro Lounge forum)
  • Vista Guru = 1000 Rep
So somebody helps you out, remember to give them some rep Name: reputation.gif

Size: 1.1 KB
The maximum number of dots you will see is 11 (in the current system).

Reputation

-99 to 0
0 to 99
100 to 199
200 to 299
300 to 399
400 to 499

Once you hit 500, you will start gaining bright green dots on top of the 5 dark dots but it takes twice as much to gain a bright green dot.

500 to 699
700 to 899
900 to 1099
1100 to 1299
1300 to 1499
1500 and up

Hardware and Personal Information - PLEASE READ

For the benefit of everyone, and to ensure the safety of personal information, would all users please note that they SHOULD NOT include any personal information such as email addresses, real addresses, telephone numbers or other identifiable material in their post. Such information will be removed by the Administrators or Moderators. This is for YOUR protection. As part of the registration process, your email address is held by the Forums to enable you to be notified if there are any replies to any of the posts/threads you have contributed to. People registered as members on this Forum can contact other members directly for advice using the Private Messaging (PM) service. They DO NOT need to know your actual email address as this function is automatically taken care of by the Forums.

Personal Information and Scams

These also fall into the phishing category, as they use social engineering/manipulation techniques to gain further information from you:

They already have your e-mail address (either chosen at random or from details found on forums and other websites). All they want now is some data to link that address to an actual person, and this is what the above quote shows. DO NOT under any circumstances reply to any e-mails that ask for this information, especially if they also want your bank details (I suspect that if you fill in this information as requested by the scammer, you could well get another e-mail asking for those details).
This is why I strongly recommend EVERYBODY to read this post, and to take note of what it says.
Unfortunately, if you do put your e-mail address on a post it may be too late. By the time it has been spotted and removed (or if you subsequently realise and remove it after sending your post), then the chances are that it might already have been spotted by the scammers.

Hardware Information

In order for people to assist you with any problems you may have, please complete the System Specs section of your CP as comprehensibly as you can (see mine for an example of the information required). For ready-built systems, such as laptops, please include the manufacturer and full model number in the appropriate section. Don't forget to keep it up to date. Many problems can be explained and solved with the aid of this information - in some cases a simple driver and/or program upgrade is all that is required. If you are doing this on behalf of someone else, please include the information of their machine in the post.

Don't forget that we need help in order to help you - only you have access to your machine. If, for example, your mouse was working normally before installing a program and now no longer works correctly, please tell us the name of that program.

If you need assistance in finding out about the hardware in your system, check out this tool: http://www.vistax64.com/software-too...info-tool.html

For those who have a HP or Compaq laptop/notebook, see the information below. The information required is 1 Model Number. The information at 3 Product Name gives the series of the computer, but not the specific model.
