4GB Memory Problems w/ x64

Hi Guys... I recently bought another 2GB of ram and I had installed Vista 64 in anticipation. Everything works great - until I put in the new 2G. All chips are 2GB Patriot PC8500 (1066Mhz) DDR2. The first several times I tried to boot, I got a BSOD. I got into safe mode and applied patch 929777. Then I could boot. Though it seems sometimes Vista would show 2.5G and sometimes it would show 4GB. I think I've got the boot issues down... but now things are unstable. WoW hangs somewhat frequently now (though it never did before).

My system: Q6600 on EVGA i680 w/ latest BIOS. 4x1GB Patriot PC-8500, 2x XFX 8600GT in SLI. Vista Home Prem x64.

Anyone have similar issues or have any ideas what I can do?

Sounds like dodgy ram to me, have you tried running the memory diagnostic tool?

Not yet... I'll try after work. I bought them from NewEgg... so if that's the case I should be ok. I've seen a lot of talk about issues with 64 and 4GB of memory. I really hope it's a stick and not an OS problem...

z3r101 is correct in guessing that you have dodgy ram modules. Is it perhaps not also possible that your old module where over-clocked in the BIOS, and that those settings are not compatible with the new modules?

I personally believe it's safer to give the launch codes of a nuclear arsenal to a 5-year-old than it is to overclock a computer...

Nothing is overclocked. I reset all of the BIOS settings to default to be sure this wasn't a problem. All the chips are the same, so there shouldn't be any inconsistencies between them.

Hello there
I got a simmilar Problem. I am very much aware of the 32bit and 4gig issue, so please spare me those answers. I know i will never get the full 4gig.

The thing is i can hardly start my system at all with the full 4gig. If at all it crashes allmost immediately. I got hole pages full of error's if anyone wants to read that. I googled them all and could not find any help at all.

What i did untill now:

1. Updated all the drivers i could think of incl. newest BIOS 1704
2. Checked my RAM with severall diagnosys tools. Result allways the same. With just
2gig (no matter which one i test together) no errors at all.
As soon as i test the 4gig together something around 2600 errors within minutes.
3. I Contacted ASUS everything is comaptible and OK
4. Contacted KINGSTON they checked everything very closely (great Service by the
way!) everything is compatible.
5. well whats left to do now?

My specs:
* ASUS P5B-E
* Intel Core 2 Duo E65850 3.0 Ghz
* Straight Power be quiet OEM 550 W (Should be enough right?)
* BFG Tech 8800 GTS OC2 320 MB GDDR3
* Kingston Memory KHX6400D2K2/ 2G (2 times)
* Vista Home Premium 32bit

No Overclocking at all. And everything runs fine with the 2gigs installed

ANY Help will be greatly appreciated
Thanks in advance

You're still using a 550W power supply? Wow. I haven't seen one of those in years. At least not in computers that are any good. My old Athon 1.3G used a 450W supply!...

Comments aside, it would appear that you are perhaps pushing the envelope of what your PSU can safely deliver. Try using a higher-rated PSU to se of thatt probs go away.

Seeing different amounts of RAM at different times, has me a little worried - check they're seated properly, etc etc. I'm sure you probably did that already, but it has to be said just in case.

As RAM prices have fallen, and more people are installing more of it, I've noticed a couple things:

(1) Makers - both mobo and memory - apparently/obviously test and certify in pairs (2 DIMMS). Voltages, speeds, and timings all seem to be based on 2 , and the SPD chip is programmed accordingly.

(2) Electrically, 4 devices are harder to drive than two.

and (3) AUTO settings (continue to) be just as much guideline as a hard and fast rule.

- - - Because of these three things, be advised that you may very well NOT be able to run High Performance Ram at what it's EPP (Enhanced Performance Profile) says it can do. Your Mobo simply may not be able to drive that much, that hard.

So, presuming it's not a software issue since you've installed KB929777 already and can get to the OS.

I know my motherboard can't/won't drive 4 at 1T, and it's considered to be one of the best Overclocking boards on the market. It also won't drive all 4 DIMMS to 1066. I can get close (1000, 5-5-5-15 at 2.3v), but even considerably loosening the timings doesn't buy me any more outright speed.

So for the time being, let's forget the EPP and concentrate on getting you stable: So you are going for DDR2 800, in the case of the OP. Look up the manufacturer's ratings for your RAM at 800Mhz, and manually set exactly the voltage and timings the things are supposed to run at. AND change the Command Rate from 1T to 2T if your board hasn't set that already by itself.

Double Check your settings, and Restart.

If that doesn't work, bump your memory voltage (vDimm) by 1 step, try again. Keep your maker's maximum rated voltage in mind as you do this, and think *Carefully* before exceeding that. Memory does not like being overdriven/overvolted at all. If you're getting close to that max and aren't stable yet, bumping the voltage to your Front Side Buss 1 notch can also help.

Yes, I understand this is "underclocking" your modules. But humor me a bit so we can get you straightened out with a nice stable baseline. Then maybe tighten up the timings from there.

I manually set the voltages at 2.0v and timings at 9-9-9-12T2 and still had issues. The ram is rated at 2.3v but I've read that they don't last long at that much power. I've been running them at 1066MHz (as they are rated), but I suppose I'll set them down to 800MHz and pump the voltage to 2.1... see if that helps. I've already requested an RMA from newegg though.

You could do that, but from experience with my and other's systems, I'm inclined to believe there's nothing wrong with the memory modules. Rather the issue relates to the Mobo having to drive twice the RAM it's been rated for. That's simply more difficult to do electrically, so you're in the position of having to work around that.

Good Luck!

hi sstainba,

I would try your memory at the rated voltage of 2.3V. It will not work at other voltages.

you also need to set the other timing parameters manually, spd does not seem to be correct.

heat buildup will burn up your chips, not power or voltage - make sure you have good airflow

good luck!

the ram has been solid since install running at 1.8v even clocked up to 1200MHz... i'm not too keen on pumping more power into it if it is not needed. voltage + current = heat = damage.

My Computer

got it working. i reinstalled the ram and got the BSOD. so it generated a dump and i rebooted into safe mode. i popped open WinDbg and ran an exception analysis... exception came from a driver for storport. MS had a patch for it... installed that and now i'm running solid. and i'm still at 1.85v. :-)

My Computer

^If it is Rated 2.3v then there is no Harm in running them at that speed.You can RMA it if it goes BAD @ rated voltage.

Check if ur RAM is stable @ 1.85v with a memory testing tool like Memtest.
