vista using over 2gb of ram in processes

Hey,

So i checked my task manager and noticed vista was using over 2gb ram 2.14 to be exact with very little programs open. Is this normal?

Im on 4gb of ocz reaperx ram 5-5-5-15 1000mhz, and ive done the usual msconfig disable stuff that doesnt need to load at startup from loading but this seems rather high? would hate to think what it would be like with only 2gb of ram.

Currently have 50 processes running in task manager.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Edit: forgot to say im on 64bit version of vista ultimate

Re: vista using over 2gb of ram in processes

thats high in my opinion, im using just under a gig now with 43 processes (-4 for stuff i have open) but saying that it could be superfetch which will release that mem if somthing else wants it.

have a another look in task man and order them by mem usage to see whats chewing it up.

I use about 1.25GB with Superfetch active, so yah - Your numbers seem pretty high. I'd definitely start checking what it may be.

Re: vista using over 2gb of ram in processes

Okay i restarted pc and now ram is idling around 1.13-1.16gb i was playing a few games previously but i thought the ram usage would go back to normal i guess not.

The main thing in processes that i can see eating up the ram is one of the svchost eating 141,524k next is dwm using 60,164k then rest are quite small

yes thats normal, that svchost is what me and scotteq were onabout, its a service called SuperFetch, I personally tend to disable the service.

Heres a post with some infomation on that:
Superfetch (Memory Prefetcher)
