install 64bit with 32bit key on same computer?

Hello everyone,

Only just discovered this forum - looks really interesting. I currently have an OEM copy of Vista 32bit which I run quite happily, but would like to install x64 on another hard disc to test it out etc.

I can borrow an x64 installation disc from a friend, can I install and activate x64 using my 32 bit key? Like I said, its the same system but will be installed on another hard disc ...

Will it allow me to activate? Or do I have to buy another copy of x64 OEM?

Yes u can Install X64 with a 32-bit key.
But i guess for it to be Legit u gotta use only 1 at a time.

Thanks for the reply. Technically it will be installed on one computer, so I can only use either 32 or 64 at any one time, just on a seperate hard disc to keep things separated a bit. ;)

You will not be using both os at the same time so as long as both versions are being used by the same computer it should be legal. It would be the same as installing the 32bit version and uninstalling the 64 bit version and vice versa. As long as you have one key to one computer it should not matter how many copies of vista you have on that one machine. I dont know if vista will like it though.

You will only be able to activate one copy of Vista with the product key number being used for either the 32 bit or 64 bit version at one time, not with both. It will only allow for one installed copy with it to be activated. If you try to do it on both 32/64 bit versions, you will probably get the Your Product Key is already in use or The Windows Vista product key you typed is invalid for activation message.

Just install it without a product key for the 30day grace period, while you decide if x64 is for you ;)
