SysWOW64 is 92 gb!!!

Hey I hope someone here can help me because I am completely lost....

I put VISTA on my brothers machine. (I run it on mine and have for a few months with no real problems) (legit copy)

After first install it was normal.

Then after three days it jumped to 92 Gigs! (mine is still fine)

Reinstalled... even tried a non legit version. SAME thing....

even to open the folder it sits there loading the files... had it sitting for an hour and still didnt finish.

anyone know what is going on?! windows folder is 103 gb!

Please help.

Thanks in advance.
PS: I have searched inside and out of google and have found no threads relating to this...

Re: SysWOW64 is 92 gb!!!

HI Willr,
I would try to boot in safe mode check the file sizes on all files/folder in the windows folder and see where it is coming from. Some logs can be gigs worth in size. Sounds like you got tons of log files that are just huge in size and need to be deleted.

Hold Shift key down while you delete the file and it will not go to recycle bin.

Re: SysWOW64 is 92 gb!!!

problem is that there are no files that are that big. if i go into the folder and highlight everything and go to properties. says its 0.99gb.

but if i go back directory and right click the syswo64 folder it says its 92 gb

windows thinks it is but theres not enough file sin there to constitute it.. i left it sitting in that folder for two hours and it it looked like it was searching but wasnt changing anything....i donno.. i tried ascan disk.. I tried copying the syswo64 folder form my pc to his in safe mode but a lot of the files were write protected.. i owned them and deleted a lot and rre copied.. but folder still says its huge..

looks like its not actually that big but windows just thinks it is and the space lookslike its taken up

weird no one else has experienced this.. cant find anything on google..

@willr
Maybe you cant see all files. Go to Control Panel>Folder Options> uncheck "Show hidden files and folders" and "Hide protected system files".

And i dont realy know how shadow copies work but i think that it could be the reason for bigger windows folder. Right click on C: partition, select properties, go to "Shadow Copies" and see if its enabled.

Re: SysWOW64 is 92 gb!!!

Hi

There is no way in Heck that te SysWOW64 folder should be that big, logs or not...that's HUGE.
What comes to mind right away is some kind of Virus, so what do you have for AV and is it up to date? I remember one from awhile back that made all HDD's appear full to Windows so the user's couldn't do anything.
The other I'm thinking of is a disk failure of some sort or the disk controller. Is there anything in Event Viewer that says anything that could be related?
Also, go into the Reliability & Performance panel and see if you have some unusual disk read/write numbers.

Re: SysWOW64 is 92 gb!!!

My AV is NOD32 and I scanned the entire partition yesterday(It took 2 hours) and it found only 1 spyware or whatever.

My HDD is brand new, It's a Seagate Barracude 7200.11 so IMO I don't think It's the problem.

I'll format my HDD and I'll never put back Windows on a different partition cause right now It's full and my PC is slow and buggy...

I've checked in Even Viewer and Reliability and Performance and I don't see anything wrong or suspicious.
