What problems have you had to date with Vista?

What problems have you guys encountered with Vista? I had trouble hooking up to my wireless internet in my house, yet it worked with XP, and Vista really slowed down my machine (C2D, 1GB RAM, GeForce 7800).

Yes, you need much more RAM, 4GB is perfect to run Vista.

My Computer

vista will run ok with 1gb ram - 2gb is good - 2gb+ is better

I have 2gb vista32 bit system and it works perfectly, as does my 4gb vista64 bit system.

They are both really snappy, fast, never bsod and very stable.

In a years worth of usage I have had no problems at all - hardware or software

Vista runs perfect here as well. I got 6 desktops and 2 laptops. Only one runs x64 ultimate. The laptops are running x86 ultimate and the rest are running x86 home premium.

The problems most people are having come from production systems, like Dell, HP and Gateway. THe way a distributor sets up a Vista install virtually always leads to disaster.

A clean install with the proper combination of software designed for that systems user will result in a stable platform that will out do an XP machine anytime.

Yes Vista does run best with as much power as you can afford to give it. Its only true drawback. Yet I did expect its requirements to increase the need for stronger hardware then previous windows versions. So I wasent surprised when more RAM and multicore CPUS made Vista trully sing.

So the moral of this rediculusly long post is. Dont buy a pre-manufactured system. The vendors idea of how Vista "should" be setup is wrong.

    My main rig runs Vista Ultimate or Server 2008. Depending on which Acronis image I decide to load.
I have noticed a couple of things on my Vista Ultimate 64 OEM:
-Buggy icons for sound volume, refresh problem on one or two sliders
-Inconsistent display behaviour in explorer, even though I know about the categories
-I managed to move a couple of shortcut icons under beneath the sidebar by mistake on the desktop, which rendered them useless with the sidebar running.
-My Opera web browser need permission to start and it cant help but wonder why.
-Conime.exe and Conime.exe *32 seem to pop up from time to time as processes, my Comodo firewall seem to have shown that it is apparantly linked to a familiar application I have, and I trust it is ok for now.

Vista 64 itself has run near flawlessly for me. It didn't like my wireless router, but when I plugged it in with a cable it configured itself (sans router drivers), and has run perfectly since.

It doesn't like freeware (unsigned digital certificates). And I had to buy a new printer (Yes, I was deeply, deeply heartbroken to "have to" replace the 5 year old spaghetti with a new multifunction print/fax/scan/orderpizza'n'fetchcoffee device. Oh - It's installed wirelessly through the driver~less router...) ;) I wanted the "It Walks The Dog, Too" version, but the store was out of stock. Pity. :cry:

Besides that, BY FAR the biggest problem I've had with this OS is the XP fans who apparently feel it's their God Given Duty to incessantly tell me how terrible it's supposed to be, and in especially excruciating detail about how misguided/brainwashed/stupid I must be for using it. But I've also been riding motorcycles for over 20 years now, and learned a LONG time ago to ignore stories about "...my uncle's cousin's friend read in the newspaper about someone who knew someone who kept crashing..." (Yes, the choice of wording is deliberate)

Well, I am new to Vista X64 and I have to say the biggest problem I have is that games run like junk.

I upgaded my PC from

AMD 64 4000 (939)
2GB RAM DDR1
GF7600GTO
Windows XP SP2 X82

to

AMD X2 64 4200 (AM2)
4GB RAM DD2
GF7600GTO
Windows Vista X64

I've went from playing games such as Team Fortress 2 on full settings on 1280x1024, to struggling on 1024x768 on low settings and getting extreme stuttering issues. Gaming performance is so bad that just 1 day into the OS I am almost considering a full format and just putting XP SP2 back in. The rest of the OS is great, but I was told performance should be at least equal to XP, and it just isn't for whatever reason.

I echo most of what Joel406 said. I finally got an Intel D975xbx2 mother board set up correctly and it is a hummer. I am able to Quad boot to windows 2000, windows XP vista32 or vista64. These are stand alone boots and that is done by swapping the boot hard drive using one of the disk-in-a-drawer devices.

While it is a total pain in the butt to set your system up this way it allows you to use a single system to assist customers who might be running any one of those operating systems.

At the moment I am only running an e6400 core 2 duo processor. Later this summer I plan on switching to something like the e6850. This should give a nice performance lift to the whole system.

Most of the problems I have had with Vista are hardware related in some form or another. Some one shoot the guy that disallowed bypassing the signed driver issue with vista 64. Vista 32 permits all drivers to be used which is to me a better approach.

I'm an occasional gamer, but I had to try Crysis on my PC. Haven't got or tried Team Fortress 2 (granted)

Rig:
Asus P5B Deluxe
Intel E6700 O/C to 3Ghz
4 Gb Ram DDR2
8800gts 640mb
74gb Raptor(system)
150gb Raptor+320gb Sata (Large format image files + Other data)
Vistax64

It will run Crysis smooth at 1920x1200 with everything set to high - Latest Nvidia drivers and DirectX 10.....maybe a driver is not performing at it's best.

Having said that, I can't see the point (nor would I want to) of going back to XP sp2 so I can't give a comparison between systems.

I was having problems with crashes and freezes, but then I stopped using a few certain old programs which were never designed for Vista and now it runs just fine.

I have a Gateway dual core with 3 GB of RAM.

My Computer

Since last January:
* buggy nvidia drivers
* buggy nvidia drivers
* buggy nvidia drivers
* failed ram corrupting OS files (needed to reinstall)
* buggy nvidia drivers
* failed install of update KB941600 that totally hosed my USB (needed to reinstall)
* failed ram corrupting OS files (needed to reinstall)
* buggy NAM (that I eventually figured out how to unistall)
* failed HD in a RAID 0 array (needed to reinstall)

Out of all my issues, I can say with some confidence the only Vista problem was the failed USB update, and perhaps this was due to the RAM failing which I didn't determine until after a reinstall (reinstalled twice in that one week).

My Computer

Buggy NForce Networking drivers.

I'm either going to put a PCI network card in, or will wind up getting an Intel chipset motherboard, and give up SLI. It isn't worth it anymore to me, to have SLI when I have to put up with buggy NForce Networking drivers that keep dropping my internet connection.

My Vista 64bit runs very well from the moment it came home. I had problems networking with my XP laptop but discovered it was the laptop's fault. I mostly video edit.

My Computer

I have a production system that is set up to quad boot:

1. Windows 2000 Professional
2. Windows XP
3. Windows Vista 32 Business
4. Windows Vista 64 Ultimate

All of these have their own set of applications but all work against the same data files.

Switching between OSes takes about one minute.

Motherboard = Intel D975xbx2
Memory = 4 Gb
CPU = Core 2 Duo e6400
video = MSI 7200 LE

My Computer

frj111, wow! How fast is win2k with 4Gb of RAM and that core 2 duo pushing it. I usually use 2000 to upgreade win98 systems to NTFS. When you run that OS...on that hardware it must be so fast that it probably knows what your doing before you do.

By the way, are all of those OSs on the same harddrive? Or do you use multiple drives? My biggest drive in my system is just 320Gb. I got 2 of that size, but putting 4 OSs on just one could get cramped.

Haha! nVidia sucks for Vista, ATI for ever :D
Just kidding, but only saw nVidia drivers issues here on the forums... strange.

Have no issues, no compatibility problems or lags on games like Crysis

A newly built PC with 2 hard drives, 1 partitioned for OS & program files & 1 dedicated for user data.

Having managed to point the 4 users "My documents", etc. to the dedicated drive, from time to time it on't let the other users save their data suggesting wither the volume is full (which it isn't) or they don't have permission.

The pattern that seams to precede this is that the different users log off or switch users rather than restart the PC.

Any suggestions are much appreciated?

Joel406,

Actually I have the new system set up a little bit differently. I think that windows XP is still quite viable and so have that as my default operating system. I started using the hot swap disks several years ago because I was having trouble with dual booting as envisioned by Microsoft.

The other 3 operating systems (Vista 64 Ultimate, Vista 32 Business and Windows 2000 Professional) all reside on their own ATA type hard drives. If that drive is in the hot-swap-drawer and the system is rebooted then that drive becomes the boot drive.

I have a 320 gigabyte Maxtor SAT drive on which I have reserved a 20 GB boot partition. The rest of the drive is formatted as a huge NTFS partition and is used for backups. Data and messing around is done with a second 160 gigabyte Maxtor SAT hard drive. Here the 2nd partition is reserved for data and is type FAT32.

What I am saying is the system can be operated in 2 drive mode or 3 drive mode at any time.

A more complete description can be found at my home page,

See: mySystem 4

As a final note I will only observe that the Intel “badAxe” motherboard is not for the faint of heart. I had more trouble with that motherboard than any other in recent memory.

Rick
