Randomly Shuts Off

My computer has started shutting off randomly within 5 mins of startup. By shutting off, I mean it just turns off...no BSOD, no errors, just turns off...at random intervals that are usually within five mins. I updated my display drivers a few days ago, and they're currently at the highest version, but it's been a few days, and this just started this morning. It seems to be fine in safe mode (which I'm in now to post this)...which leads me to think it is, in fact, display drivers...but they're up to date, I have no solution there...now what?

My Computer

Sounds like a PSU issue. Check and double check all internal power connections. If that doesnt' work, then the next step is to get a hold of a spare/second Power Supply and swap them out to test.

Hi WoodyNaDobhar,

Welcome to Vista Forums.

I would agree with Scotteq, it sounds like it is a Power Supply that has gone bad. You could also have a overheating issue to. Pop open the case and check to make sure that all your fans, especially the CPU fan, are running and clean.

You can try going into Device Manager, and Roll Back your video driver to the older one to see if that is the problem.

Good idea with the onboard GPU...

Gave that a shot, and got the same results...it waited about five mins, and just turned off. Definately NOT the graphics driver.

My Computer

As for the PSU, I assumed anything as simple as that would not be affected by running in safe mode...is this assumption erroneous?

Currently I'm running a 550W with the above hardware. I don't have another power supply lying around (at least, one that supports the MoBo's power input), so I'll need to get a new one. I intend to add, in the near future, a striped array of SATA hard drives (total of three more HD's), all WD Caviar 350 16M. What wattage should I go for?

My Computer

That does indicate that it most likely isn't a PSU problem but I still wouldn't rule out PSU lol. What brand PSU's are these ? Some PSU's don't live upto their ratings. It's also a matter of how many amps and how many rails, not just what they rate in volts.

I would roll back the video drivers and see if that fixes your problem as it only seem to have become an issue since you updated them. It could also be your motherboard.

My Computer

Are you getting any errors showing in event viewer for around the time of the shutdowns?

Have tried tried to do a msconfig ?
Are you sure that the system is not going into hibernation ?
Is any of the fan making any noise ?
Is it still shutting down when the system is in safe mode ?

PSU: *nod* it could be, but considering the circumstances, it seems unlikely.

Event Viewer: granted I'm not very familiar with the tool, but from what I managed to figure out, it seems to just have logged generic 'hey, windows died' notices...nothing specific. I could be wrong, tho...

MSConfig: not yet...any tips for when I get to it?

Hibernation: If it is, it's doing so in inappropriate times, and does not recover...seems unlikely.

Fans: Fans are copasetic. I even ran a system temp tool to make sure the cpu wasn't overheating or something...it's not, everything is well within safe parameters.

Safe Mode: it does NOT turn off when in safe mode...runs great, actually.

Other things: I removed each bit of hardware one by one, to see if any of those were doing it...sound card, video card, network card, dvd/cd RW...no change in the results.

Next on the agenda: system restore. Nothing had changed since the problem appeared, this AM, and the last updates I ran were days ago, but hey, ya never know.

Your processor is running at 3013 MHZ, is it overclocked?

All of your running task are valid task so it is not that.

click on start, all program, accessories, right click on command prompt, run as administrator

type in sfc /scannow

this will run the system file checker utility.

Another diagnostic trick is to boot into the bios.
Leave the computer running and if it shuts down you know it is hardware related and not software.

BIOS: same as safe mode, it runs fine

Ran a scandisk AND memory checker (the utility on the vista disk), the latter in extended mode (man, that took a while)...both the disk and the RAM are fine.

Try a bechmarking program that stresses your cpu in safe mode to see if that shuts off the computer.
What are your schedule task you have?
What power options do you have?

Run a memory test (either memtest86 or the one on the Vista disc). Everytime I've had random shutdowns or reboots, it was due to faulty ram. And ram does go bad esp if you're opening the case a lot (not a side effect of, but handling the components).

My Computer

Well, I wussed out...I just reloaded Vista. Seems to work fine now. I'm gonna update and install drivers slowly, see if any of them causes the problem to return...
