Wrong Overclocking?

I tried to overclock my memory ram from 800MHz to 1066MHz,!!big mistake!!,my pc start to restart 5-6 times with many biiiiibs end after some more strange sounds and restarts fortunetly my bios autorecovered.(duall bios)
Now when i start my pc with the rest messages...memory dual\dual bios mbla mbla i see this to>-->CPUID: O6FB Patch ID 00B6.
I s that a normal?

This is old I know. but ya, depending on the ram some can acheive that sort of OC. and some cannot. Was your rAM linked. if so then it might have Oc'd your CPU along with it. 800MHz ram I would try for at most 900 MHz, maybe 950. but nothin over 1000. don't try 1066.. throw in 900 and I bet you'd be ok.

Don't forget to loosen the timings first. and if that works, then slowly work them down.
oh and ur Q6600 is not a intel Core Duo Quad.. it's a Core 2 Quad Q6600.

did something similar oc'd my cpu and forgot to trim the ram speed big mistake though like you i have dual bios and gratefully it auto recovered after all those restarts i just forced the 800mhz on the ram and upped the cpu speed left everything else on auto i want more advice on the ram before i speed that up don't want to have to get more but if i do fry it i'll just get faster ram so i don't have to.

What on earth made you think you could do that? Don't... lol. There's a huge misconception making the rounds that increasing RAM speed significantly increases performance; this is not true. Yes, you can find benchmarks moving RAM from 800MHz to 1066MHz, but the performance gains are marginal at best, usually an increase of only a couple percentage points.

What you should do is keep the RAM at 800MHz and, using a divider, increase your cpu. That, much more so than simply increasing the dram clock, will give you significant increases in performance. However, don't just run wild in your bios willy-nilly, or you will be back with far worse problems. Read up on what it is you're doing before you do it.

so you don't think speeding up ram is a good idea then? didn't think so either but wanted to be sure wheni use si sandra it seems to think i'm running ddr3 ram don't know why?

Well, let me be more clear, because I don't want to leave the impression that faster RAM "isn't a good idea".

If you're just increasing RAM speed alone, then that's really not going to do much for you. You only gain a performance increase of 1 or 2 percentage points, which isn't much. Far better than increasing your RAM's speed is to increase your cpu speed, which will give you an increase of more than just a few percentage points. Best is to increase both, giving you the most possible increase in performance.

I say that because you've got to bench each system to see what it does? Some chipsets perform worse when you increase RAM speed, because you also have to increase the RAM's latency. This is not always true for every chipset, but it is for some. In those cases, it's better to keep RAM speed at 800MHz, with tighter RAM timings, and increase the cpu for best overall system performance.

yeah you did thanks for the insight i'm just gonna leave my ram alone it's to expencive to mess around with and takes alot less to break when OCing.

Well, it's not really that hard to OC these days, and really, most DDR2 800 can run ~ 900MHz just fine, you just have to make sure you adequately cool your cpu. Even if your RAM can't run faster, it's really not important in the grand scheme of things. Core speed reigns supreme in terms of performance.

Boards these days make overclocking so simple it's really hard to go wrong. Gone are the days of having a calculator by your side, now all you do is set a few parameters and the bios spits out what all your timings are going to be ahead of time... :huh: making it difficult to mess up if you have read before hand what you're doing and have some idea about the capability of your specific hardware and what you're shooting for.

thanks bud i'll have a look would need something else to cool my cpu though it's fine at 3Ghz with the stock cooler but don't want to take it further than that just yet.

Yeah, that's a wise decision. If you're already running at 3GHz, then you're not really going to see any performance gains in your games going higher... about the only thing you'll accomplish is to increase some synthetic benchmark score... meh... don't bother.
