not allowed to change update settings as administrator??

Hi, first time poster here....

So i'm logged in as an administrator yet i can't change the settings in automatic update. i can see the settings but they are greyed and "locked". very annoying.

Has anyone seen this issue? It may have been there all along i just never cared to change the settings until the pending SP1 release.. i want to be there when it happens instead of the default setting of 3am!

Much appreciated!

Re: not allowed to change update settings as administrator??

Ah, I once had this problem. When I was on my university's network, they had group settings that seemed to force that. I never found a way around the issue, even after I left school. The only thing that resolved the problem was a fresh install of Vista.

Someone with more network experience might be able to help you, but I was unable to find assistance.

As a workaround, you can always search for updates on your own. I did that quite often.

Re: not allowed to change update settings as administrator??

Hi dustinfrank,

Welcome to Vista x64 Forums.

Double check with this tutorial to see if it's just something simple you may have overlooked.

Windows Update - Windows Automatic Updating

Do you have UAC turned on or off?

If off, try turning it back on to see if you can change the update settings after the restart.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Re: not allowed to change update settings as administrator??

Hi Shawn, unfortunately the tutorial wasn't helpful. I am able to access all of the settings areas either through the control panel or security center, but all of the options are greyed out and i can't change them. I even activated the "real" administrator account using the cmd prompt but to no avail.

Re: not allowed to change update settings as administrator??

Ok dustinfrank,

Are you part of a domain? If so, you will need to contact the domain administrator.

You might see if running a sfc /scannow command may fix the problem.

System Files - SFC Command

If not, then doing a Repair install should fix it.

Repair Install For Vista
