Latest recommendation on installing 8GB memory in a new Vista 64 install

Howdy,

May take the plunge on setting up Vista 64 on a new drive. I have 8gb installed currently in this XP box (in anticipation of Vista 64), and so was wondering if it is critical to remove two modules before installing Vista 64. What do you know?

Noel

Re: Latest recommendation on installing 8GB memory in a new Vista 64 install

As a precaution you could remove the extra sticks and then put them back when the OS is installed.
I have read a couple of post by people with errors above 2gig installed.
I dont know if ms have put out a hotfix yet but that will not apply yet as you have not installed the OS.

You can try the install with all ram in but if vista fails to install it will take longer to sort it out, than removing the two sticks in the first place.

Thank you kindly, and I think what you seems makes sense. Pretty easy to just remove two modules so that is what I will do. I did hear there is a hotfix or update that resolves this issue, but as you say it's a fresh install.

Well, did you do your 8gb install from the get go or add 4gb after your initial install?

Got it with 2, sucked. Upgraded to 4, good but I wanted great so I got 8. So, 4 after my initial. No problems so far, only had it for about a month and i haven't had time to sit down and test to see if my system is in fact using the entire 8gb. It registers, but that doesn't mean its using it all. I'll get to that soon with break comming up and all.

I guess it will use it *if* there is a reason to use it, ie if your software needs it and was designed to look for it. I bought the extra modules to go to 8 only because I plan to use Gigastudio 4 which is designed to use 8+ gb . . .

Thanks for that reply!

Yeah, the only thing that i can think of at the moment that could possibly go up to 8gb is my Adobe CS3 suite... and thats a big maybe.

No problem.
