registry tweaks

Vista Guru
I have downloaded several menu tweaks from this site (copy/move to folder for one). The extension shown on the link is .reg. When I download they are saved as .efw. When I right click there is no merge option, just open. I haven't done these things before. Only used the old pwr. toys and pwr. tweaks from the old days. Thanks in advance.

That is strange. It should not download and be save as anything else except the original .reg extension.

It appears that you have some security program (Ex: CA Security Centre) that may be automatically renaming them for you. See:

EFW File Extension - Open .EFW files


If so, you can just simply change/rename the .efw extension back to .reg manually to use the file. Here's how if needed.

In addition to tweaking the registry, you may also consider using a registry cleaner. I can recommend one that works well, makes its own backups and is free.

Everywhere I've read , never , never , never ever use these registry cleaners !! I used them in Win 98 and always had problems . Never in XP and absolutely never in Vista .

They are safe to use if you check the results to make sure that there is nothing in them that will damage your system. It's when folks just let the registry cleaner fix whatever it finds without checking them first is when the problems arise.

I have yet to see a problem in the results using the free Wise Registry Cleaner program though. You might give it a try.
