Just joined this site and it really helps, all you usually hear is that Vista is horrible to work with but seems like people here figured it out, so thanks :D

A year ago when i built my new computer and decided to get Vista, I went to BestBuy and they gave me what I thought i needed. Turns out it was an upgrade version of Vista Ultimate and I ended up having to use my old IDE HDD ever since.

I'm wondering if there's a way to change so that Vista can load off of my SATA HDD, and will this help things run smoother?

I am not sure what you mean ?
The Upgrade Version can be installed on both SATA and IDE Drives.You can even do a clean install with an Upgrade Version.

I'm wondering if I can either move the boot files from one HDD to another manually or if there is some way to do that.

If you want to mirror you existent HDD with a new one, many inexpensive software out there will conveniently get the job done. Or you can reinstall Vista on the new HDD then it will boot from there.

What bruce2 says is a good idea. I recommend the use of Acronis True Image. You may have to repair startup on the new installation one way or another--i.e., using the repair startup feature on your Vista DVD or using Vista Boot Pro (e.g.). Also, activation may be an issue. I'd format your old drive before talking to MS if that becomes necessary.
