Vista64 cannot Index Network Shares.. Known Bug

This is a known bug according to several Internet sources...

So how can I DISABLE indexing of network shares???

I have a network share which has like 200 folder/sub-folders, and everytime I access it, it works for a second or two, then it hangs windows explorer, sometimes hanging my whole PC (explorer.exe)!!!

And I know it is doing this because the root folder only has like 20 sub-folders, all of which I can clearly see listed, but when I do a Wireshark capture (tcpdump), I see all the sub-folders and files being listed, so I know it must be spidering the share and indexing everything. The worst part is, this share is on a NetApp, so there are .hourly and .daily and .weekly and .monthly snapshots of all my data.. In all, it is several dozen gigabyes of files, folders, and sub-folders, all of which Vista is "attempting" to index, but cannot/store..

Does anyone know how to turn off indexing? Heck, I'd be happy with NO (not even local) indexing just to avoid this damned problem again and again...

No known ETA on a fix from MSFT, from what I can find.. Which is a shame!

Sorry, I should have said I TRIED THAT ALREADY... There's no option in there to exclude network shares, and in fact my network shares don't even show up in there, only disks. I mounted the share to a drive, but that didn't show up in there either.

I also found some indexing program for Vista, FROM MSFT, but when I installed it it did nothing at all. I'm told it gives you control over indexing network shares, but apparently it, like this main issue at hand, is not working properly on Vista64...

*sigh* .... Maybe I should just format and install Vista32..

Sorry, I couldn't help. I feel you pain though if that helps. Here's a little moral support anyway. I'll let you know if I bump into anything. Surely, there is a way to completely disable indexing. I wouldn't miss it. What about stopping a service. I haven't looked, but maybe???

Do what ZNOD says, and just remove the network shares from the list of indexed locations. That way, only selected local drives and folders will be indexed.

dzomlija, check out what I said in comment #3 - there are no network shares or locations listed, just physical drives (it doesn't even list mapped drives)..

I think I may have it for you.
Highlight the shared folder. Right click and go to Properties. In the General Tab. Click Advanced and then uncheck the index this folder check box.
Tom,

Oh man, that is a good idea..

But I just checked and neither the share, nor folders in the share, have Advanced options, nor Sharing options.
