Why does Vista take 10 minutes to shut down?

My nice 200GB drive in my lappy barfed so I went back to the stocker w/ factory Vista install (about 5 mo old) and am trying to get it updated.

Pretty much been at it all afternoon.

One problem is that it hits the XML4 update and hangs there forever and ever.

Another problem is that shutdowns take forever. I've been sitting here 15 minutes now looking at '****ting down' and I'll probably get fed up with waiting for it and pull the battery.

I've always found Vista shutdowns to be 3-10x longer than XPs are, but this is getting ridiculous.

If it matters, lappy is a 5mo old HP 8510W.

Best brace yourself. From what I see in your post, your only real way to get a temporary fix is to run your restore disk. It will put your laptop back to the way it was when you took it out of the box. Your old HD has been dormant for too long. Files have corupted. The HP files to be exact. Which brings me back to the *temporary" remark I made earlier. You should already be familiar with the lovely software HP loads in it's laptops. It falls on its face first chance it gets and cripples your PC.

Your stuck with a restore. A repair my bring it back to an extent but will not last.

To permanetly fix your issues, get a Microsoft Vista DVD and use the product key on the green sticker on the bottom of the PC. Install Vista clean without the HP garbage and Norton IS 60 day trial or the MS Office trial or any other trial they may want to put you through.

Install Vista(whatever version), Phone Activate(no there is no other way) intall AV( a real one not Norton) some spyware protection and head for windows update.

I have seen you situation roughly 1788 times and speaking as a MCSE A+ (and a few others) tech.

Its all you got.

Sorry.

I don't think there's anything wrong with this drive.
Also, while HP loads the heck out of their consumer line, this machine is on the business/workstation line and it's really pretty clean. And this drive IS factory install. I basicly took the machine out of the box, booted it once to make sure all was working and replaced the drive with a 200GB, so this original is as stock as can get.

Also, I'm just throwing a couple apps on it to get me thru until a replacement for the 200 gets here. This is not going to be the new install (which will be dual boot XP/Vista on seperate partitions like the 200 that died was.)

Since posting this, i've disabled the update on the XML and am at stage 3 of getting all the others installed. Then I'll try XML again.

Still, Vista is very slow to shut down. Kinda slow to start too

Its all those HP programs running at startup. I purge those installs all day long. I know your back to your original HD, that is understood. Your still best bet is a clean uninfected by HP install of Vista. Business version or not. Its the stable way.

Your officially 1789

Well, I've now done clean installs on this machine several times while figureing out the best way for me to share a Vista & XP system.

I can tell you with surity, that if you want all the hardware to work you have to install all the HP software that drives it.

Yes, a stripped down install can be done w/o all the HP software, but it'll leave the machine crippled and unable to use half it's hardware.

And what is 1789?

You may be right that this install is all crapped up and unuseable, but I really don't feel like spending a day installing all this crap only to dump this drive again in 2-3 days when the new drive comes.

I decided to abandon the Hitachi, I've just lost all confidence in them and ordered a Seagate.

You can download all the "drivers" for all of your hardware for free from the HP website 24/7. The software that pops up at startup along with their many other intrusions into your system are not needed.

It just hung itself for the umpteenth time and I give up.

Booted from DVD and removed all the partitions and started over.

Yes, I know I can download the drivers, there's like 30 different things to download and install. PITA.

I'm looking at a half day's work just to get a working OS. But I guess I have no choice.

Really, I'm pisseed the 200 took a crap. Really sucks, takes months of work to get a laptop working properly and all that is gone. Luckily I keep my files on the domain so I didn't actually lose any data, but I've got a hundred hours of work to do :(

My Computer

If its any solace. I'm reinstalling Ultimate x64 on my laptop while I'm writing to you. Its an acer though and its factory software is worse then HPs. I download all my drivers from the individual components websites. It takes awhile.

I had the same problem.
Solved it the dummy way.
Before shutdown: closed all programs dat I could close by right-click <end>.
Shutdown: still very long.
Then went in mgmt console> manage startup programs.
Closed down a program
Shutdown: no help

Until (my case) I closed down the Google Desktop. Shutdown in 10 sec.
Deinstalled Google Desktop.
Problem solved

Google desktop? yuck.
Like I tell people, keep only what you need, delete what you think is garbage.
It makes a difference.
My shutdowns average 5-7 seconds, startup 15 secs.
