My new Vista computer sometimes unexpectedly shuts off. Any suggestions?

My new Vista computer sometimes unexpectedly shuts off. Any suggestions?

There are two times when I have noticed it stopping for a reason. Other times I do not know why it shuts off. Once it stopped after I had a flash drive in the USB port. I did the proper procedure for "safely removing" it, but the computer still shut off when I took the drive out.

Another time the computer more or less went to sleep. I was able to restart the computer without it rebooting. I wonder if there is some way to set the time for it to do this.

Hi Xarzu,

Not sure on the flash drive and USB port, but Step Two in this tutorial will show you how to set the Power Options to what sleep settings you want.

Hope this helps,

Definetly check the power settings, because it kept turning stuff off on my pc.

Also go to the USB controller in device manager, and turn off any power saving options.

Apart from that, ensure that the USB driver is up to date, thats all I can think of.

This worked very well, thanks.

And I needed some updates too and I got them.

Many times windows will shut itself down or restart as a result of a 'catastrophic failure' on its part. My system only did it once and that's because the ribbon cable hooking my hard drive to my motherboard had somehow loosened itself up (probably my wife doing aerobics in the office like I asked her NOT to do around my computers, but she doesn't listen to me most of the time). :P
