Need Help re. Unknown Hardware Driver Issue

I need some help with a Vista Home Prem install.

I did a "clean install" from XP Home using Upgrade media. The first install series went bad during a Windows Update reboot when I let it update several "recommended" updates at once. End result a new clean install.

Second install went much better and system was working well for a couple of days. I normally leave the machine running but due to wx in the area, chose to shut down last night. On restart when I arrive at the desktop I get an immediate notification that Windows has found new "Unknown" hardware and wants to install drivers. It offers me the usual options for finding the drivers or ignoring the problem for now. When I attempt to select an option, I find that the cursor is frozen and nothing seems to resolve that.

I've tried a Start Up repair...no problems found. I've tried a couple of system restores to different (known functional) prior dates but after the restore and subsequent reboot, the problem reappears. Tried a Safe Mode boot...same thing. I was using a Logitech bluetooth USB mouse/keyboard, so I replaced that with a PS2 setup...same result. I have disconnected all cables other than the monitor and keyboard/mouse...same thing. I'd provide error logs if I could get to them, but that seems impossible (at my "enthusiast" skill level)

System is a DFI LanParty UT NF590SLI M2R/G, 4 (4x1) gig Corsair PC6400 C4, AMD Athlon X2 5000, GeForce 8600GTS, 750w PS, Gateway 24" Flat Panel.

Any help would be appreciated before I have to go in and reload the OS...again!!
