Vista Ultimate x64 Very Sloooow

Iīve just built a new PC 4gb ram, intel quad 6600 Asus p5b SE mobo.

I installed Vista ultimate on it and itīs taking 5 minutes to start up and it took 5 hours to install COD4!!! everything is very slow

I installed XP Pro 32 Bit on it.. and it performs as fast as i expected

I installed Vista Home Premium from an Acer recover disk i had laying around 32 bit again and once again itīs quick

Does anyone have any idea why Vista ultimate would be so slow and what can i do to fix it?

Re: Vista Ultimate x64 Very Sloooow

Welcome to the forum exmachina.

Make sure you have all the vista x64 updates from windows (critical and recommended) installed and also the latest bios for your motherboard.

Startup will gradually get faster as time goes on and superfetch gets straigthened out, but it shouldn't take 5 minutes; or 5hrs to install a game.

Re: Vista Ultimate x64 Very Sloooow

Thanks For the reply.

The BIOS has been upgraded however the problem I am having is that when I install Ultimate x64 it takes too long to download and install the upgrades.. the first lot took over 3 hours to install. and that was only the first 2

Is there a workaround? or any particular ones i should install first?

How fast is your L2 cache? Your front side bus? Gotta make sure everything is fast, not just the main components.

Re: Vista Ultimate x64 Very Sloooow

it should not be any slower then the 32bit version, something in your system is wrong I would say drivers, maybe vista installed really old drivers.

Re: Vista Ultimate x64 Very Sloooow

For starters, ensure you install Service Pack 1 (for which ever version you wish; recommend x64).

But once you've done a clean install, i'd recommend disabling a couple of things:

1.) Disable System Protection (a.k.a Sytem Restore)
2.) Disable UAC (unless you like it)
3.) Disable Windows Defender (you probably have your own security solution)
4.) Set your Page File manually (Initial Size = 1.5x your RAM --6GB; Maximum Size = 2x your RAM -- 8GB)
5.) Disable Index Servicing
6.) Disable Superfetch (tends to cause too much hardisk activity)

Oh, and not to mention updated drivers (i.e MOBO chipset/controller/s, video, audio, DirectX etc)

These are some pratical steps that will automatically improve performance in Vista (whether x86 or x64).

Re: Vista Ultimate x64 Very Sloooow

Just to follow this up... I tried all the above but to no avail so i bought a x86 copy and installed that.

A couple of days ago i decided to install a copy of X64 as a dual boot to see if there was anything i could do with it... guess what it loads really quickly now..

Torn between doing a format and a fresh install or leaving things as they are!

Re: Vista Ultimate x64 Very Sloooow

Exmachina,

It's up to you, but if you have the hard drive space, I would leave both and try them both out for a while first to see which one works best for you to do a clean install with later if you wanted to still.
