Vista Automated Defragment

Hi Guys,

First post, Woo!
Anywho, I have loaded a fresh install of Vista Ultimate 32bit,
The automated Defrag kicked in, I stumbled upon this as I saw my CPU usage going through the roof! Which is OK, i have a very grunty system, The defrag seemed to run forever, I just continued on with my usual tasks and my pc stays on for weeks at a time. I never really noticed if it had finished or how long it took, but it is scheduled quite frequently, and every time it runs, it takes a long time, is this usual? Especially with running so often?

PS. The system is a Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66, 2GB Ram, P5W-DH Deluxe, 250GB+320GB+500GB. If this helps!

Yeah, unfortunately the Vista defragger is very slow. IMHO, I'd recommend using 3rd party defrag tools, like JKdefrag or defraggler.

I use JKDefrag, since it's got some nice drive optimization options. It's a commandline tool, but you'd have to use commandline options when scheduling a defrag in Vista's Task Manager anyway, so it's not that big a deal. Alternatively, there are 3rd party GUI (Graphical User Interface) versions available.

I'll just repeat my usual advice: get a good third party automatic defragmenter if you want to defrag Vista keeping the best of all worlds i.e. automatic operation + comprehensive control + selection of defrag modes/volumes.

A good auto defragger will run in the background and defrag in real time but using only idle system resources, so your other running apps will not be affected and CPU usage will be low. Unlike the old scheduled defrag, you will never have to bother to set defrag schedules and wait around for it to end before using your PC. The drive(s) will remain healthy and you'll not need to waste time.

Google for 'fully automatic defragmenter' and you can get free trial versions off some of the sites.
