Hi, Im currently running XP pro 32bit with this setup:

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0GHZ Wolfdale 1333FSB
Corsair XMS2 4GB DDR2-800 2X2GB
ASUS P5K mobo
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250GB SATA2
HIS Radeon HD 3850 ICEQ3 Turbo x2 in xfire

I am thinking about upgrading to Vista home premium 64bit. Its used primarily for gaming and web browsing, etc. I play mostly online games with a few friends and planning on jumping on Age of Conan next month and would like to make the most of it. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

Hello fancyrat

Welcome to the Forums!

I am thinking about upgrading to Vista home premium 64bit. Its used primarily for gaming and web browsing, etc. I play mostly online games with a few friends and planning on jumping on Age of Conan next month and would like to make the most of it. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

Sorry to say x64 can not be *upgraded* to. It has to be a clean install.
Maybe you can get some ideas from the Tutorial at the link below.

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/117366-clean-install-full-version-vista.html

I hope this helps. Be sure to look around the Tutorial section, there is a lot of knowledge there.

EDIT: Upgrading from one OS to another only causes trouble. Clean Install.

Dude,

It will (or will not be lol experiences vary) a big pain in your ass for a few days (or weeks depending upon your skill level) til you get things sorted out. I for one did not want to migrate to Vista but when I built this gaming system I figured I needed to whether i wanted to or not. To be honest? I have come to like Vista. MS tried to do a lot of things with this OS and they actually got most of them right. There are growing pains and things that make you just want to kill something (good thing you are a gamer, hopefully FPS's lol) but over all it's great. The folks here a great about answering your questions and the tutorials are awesome. Crap, i'm starting to sound like a freaking Bill Gates paid advertisement, but I mean everything I have said.

I built this system for two reasons. To learn and to game. I have learned much more than I thought I would and the games I play online are so much better. Could I assume that you are going to upgrade some hardware as well? You wouldn't be looking at the 64 bit system is you weren't, if your motherboard will support it, that RAM is screaming "Make me 8 GB's". Just remeber one thing. WHEN you upgrade to the 64 bit system of Vista, install it with 2 GB's of RAm, do the SP1 and upgrades, THEN get the WHQL drivers for your hardware, THEN add the rest of the RAM.

Bottom line? Do it.

Thanks for the info bubba. I'll be sticking with the current hardware setup for now, except more ram cause its just so cheap right now. There will definatly be upgrades in the future though. I am expecting bugs and setbacks that come with switching to any new OS but always hope for few. I've come to the conclusion that I am going to switch to it, so I'll probably be around here more often in the coming months. I can always switch back if things don't work out anyhow :)
