Lost space on partition

Hi guys,

Ok I have an external 300gb drive partitioned into pieces of 99.36gb. Now my problem is not about the loss of space over the 3 parts added together - i understand that bit.

My problem is that one of the partitions is saying it has used 22.95 gb but it hasnt - there isnt anything on it. I've even checked for hidden files and other than the system volumn files there is nothing there.

Im really stumped

Hoping someone can throw some light on it for me

Cheers

Humm, a 300 GB hard drive has a real capacity of about 280 GB.
Anyway, did you format the 3 partitions?

Hi Sidney1st

Yeah the partitions are all formatted and all show the same amount of cap at 99.36 gig so why only one should show a used space of 19.2 gig (jeese it was 22.95 gb earlier) when there isnt anything on it other than the volume info which im sure isnt that much is really really odd.

I'll reformat that partition and see how it lies then.

Cheers

Update - I reformated it and its back to 99.27 gig so god knows what was taking up the file space.

To be frank i don't know, but it happens when using the vista option to reformate after partionning in NTFS, maybe a vista confusion between MB and Mb for the total capacity

The Volume Shadow Service will use the entire unused hdd space for file history and recovery, its not usually a problem because VSS decreases the amount of shadow files its using when you use more space on the HDD.
