Adding favorites problem

Iīm brand-new to the forum, so please be kind to a computer challanged newbie. My problem (or one of them anyway) is that when I try to add a site to my favorit list I get the message (roughly translated - my OS language is not English) "unable to add _____ to favorite list. Undefined error." Iīve tried a system recovery point that was before the problem started to no avail. What to do? Very frustrating. If anyone knows how to fix this problem, please let me know in simple baby steps so I donīt create any more problems. Thanks

Re: Adding favorites problem

Hello Snakeman,

Welcome to the forums.

I had this prob. the other day. I was able to solve it by taking ownership of the favorites folder. If I remember right, it gave me the option for subfolders and I clicked yes. Take Ownership of file

Hope it works for you too.

Re: Adding favorites problem

Sorry. Try this: Context Menu - Take Ownership
Download the .reg file and follow the instructions. This will add 'Take ownership' to your right click context menu. After merging the .reg file, right click on the 'Favorites' folder and select 'Take Ownership'. Select all subfolders and files if offered. A cmd. prompt window will open, do it's thing and close. Hopefully you'll then be good to go.

Re: Adding favorites problem

Did the download and according to the info it was installed o.k., but when I try it according to the instructions: nothing, nada, and I still canīt take controll or add favorites to my favorite list (bummer) and I also tried to run the vLite program but it said that I needed a higher authority level. What gives?

Re: Adding favorites problem

Are you saying that when you right click on 'Favorites' and click on 'take ownership' nothing happens or there's no 'take ownership' on the right click menu?
Are you logged on to a User account with administrator privileges?

Re: Adding favorites problem

There is no take ownership on the menu and as I installed ulitmate with admin privileges, I donīt see why I donīt have total access.

Re: Adding favorites problem

Hmmm.... I don't understand that. The account created at installation is a normal user account that can be elevated to admin. That's what the UAC prompts are all about. When you click on the continue button, you receive admin. privileges for the action you are trying to make, such as registry changes or installing some software. You can try this and see if it works.
Right click on the 'favorites' folder and select 'properties'. Click on the security tab. Click on edit. Highlight your user account and check the box for 'Full control' = allow. OK & OK. See if you can do a shortcut then. Might try going through that tutorial to add take ownership to the right click menu once more. Sometimes things don't work for me the first time.

Good Luck.

Re: Adding favorites problem

Hi Gary, I donīt know what I did but I can now add new web sites to my favorite list (my original problem). I added administrater to the log in window and turned off the UAC (Iīm the only one with access to this computer). What I want is complete admin. access to my computer but microsoft in their infinite wisdom seem to think that this is a no-no. There must be some way around this problem. Another thing: the admin. window is a complete fantasy construction with icons and a background that I would never choose. I want it to be an exact image of my user window: same background, same icons etc.. Is there any way this can be accomplished? Thanks for your help so far.

Hi Snakeman,
The reason for not running in the full admin account is that if a virus or malware gets in, it will have full admin permissions and be able to have free reign of the computer. I don't recommend it. Yes UAC is a bit of a pain, but once the programs are all installed and everything is set up, its not that big of a problem. What I did was to disconnect my internet connection and then disable UAC to install all my programs and get things set up. Then turn UAC back on and reconnect the internet. If you want to run in the admin. account, you will have to go through and set it up with background, short cuts, icons etc. You might be able to just copy some things from you user account to the admin acct. (quick launch shortcuts, favorites). Haven't tried it myself, so not sure.
Here is a tutorial on how to enable the administrator acct. Administrator Account
Good luck,
Gary
