Directory Errors, 90 picture folders

Please help me understand an fix this

I cannot access the pictures as path is too long, or the highlite disapears repetedly. cannot move or do anything
i deleted some directories that I was not allowed to access like mydocuments, and moved the pictures into documents, and what ever else i did. i do not like this mess MS made out of my directory --> and now i made it worse, Is there any fix??:rolleyes::eek::cry::o

Hi dan53gsd,

The folders you deleted are called "symlinks" and are the folders XP uses to function but Vista uses new folders in different locations. So Microsoft mapped the old folders to the new ones using a symlink, They are there for all the software to function since they still use these folder paths that you deleted.

Deleting these unaccessible folders is a huge mistake because most software still use these folders to find the new locations Vista uses for your files even though you cant access them, the software can.

Restore all the folders you deleted if you want to fix the directory errors.
(thats the reason why you cant access them and why they are also hidden)

shell folders in registry showes under my pictures: [pictures\pictures\pictures

and has another entry called:[69d2cf90-fc33-4fb7-9aoc-ebbof-ofcb43c] with
\pictures\pictures\pictures\pictures\pictures\slide shows

in my case i think the system put them back and over time i deleted them many times and that may be how i wound up wound up with 90 picture folders

YOU ARE THE FIRST PERSON, BOOK, EXPERT HWO HAS GIVEN ME ANY INFO ON WHAT THESE USELESS FOLDERS ARE FOR, and thank-you very much

I wish they were hidden then and this seems to be an unfortunate sloppy messing with the directory by MS also

When I try to move the pictures into the top [Pictures] directory I get [the sorce file names are larger than supported] and it will do nothing

i have tried going back to reset points, they do not reset this, and i have been deleting thoes my picture directories for quite a long time so would have to go back too far

Thats disturbing...I guess its a good time to slipstream SP1 into your Vista DVD and reinstall...Tutorial here: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/151606-vista-sp1-slipstream-installation-dvd.html

If you need to change the folder locations from your user directory to another location elsewhere dont manually change the location just right-click the folder and goto properties then use the tab below to change the location settings...

Yeah you should be able to just reset the folder locations, give it a try and let me know if you have any success...

I had the same thing happen, They wouldn't delete as "file names were too long". I have been trying to fix it for 2 weeks. I finally, yesterday, renamed all of them with a # (1, 2 etc, tho I guess naming them all 1 would work) and deleted them all, except for the first pictures folder. And so far they haven't come back.
