Vista System Restore 0x80070005 Error

When I click on System Restore to do a manual restore it says it's turned off. I don't know how to turn it back on either. Also when I uncheck the Read Only box in the System Volume Information, it doesn't stick. It immediately comes right back. I feel that if I could get this box unchecked I'd be fine.

When I click on System Restore or type in rstrui.exe I get a windows that pops up and says that System Protection is turned off and then when I click on Open System Protection at the bottom the 0x80070005 error comes up. Also where it says Available disks, it says searching.. When I click OK, it says it cannot rescan the disks for the following reason: Access is denied. And yes I'm logged in as Admin....not Admin but I have Admin authority. What gives?? By any chance would Nero Back Up cause this? This is a fresh install of Vista HP x64 and I have a few programs installed but not much. I have 3 HDD's. A 500GB WD SATA, a 250GB Seagate SATA and a 80GB IDE drives. My C: drive is my 500GB SATA drive. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Oh and I had this problem before SP1 was installed too.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Vista System Restore 0x80070005 Error

Well as it turns out the problem was Service Pack 1. Vista SP1 isn't ready for public use. So you can install all the Vista updates that show up. I didn't even see anything for SP1. I actually downloaded it from the MS site itself. I'd say stay away from it until they've got it fixed or until SP2 is released, which won't probably be for at the very least another year or two!

Hi Bowen,

System Restore works fine for everyone else using SP1...

Have you disabled the system restore service or changed the "C:\System Volume Infomation" folder security?

No it doesn't work for everyone else, but it does work for some people. For example it was working fine for me with my first install of Vista but then when I reinstalled it, it didn't. My laptop which was fine now too doesn't work (the system restore that is). Sure some people are fine with it, while others aren't.

Re: Vista System Restore 0x80070005 Error

Microsoft have not listed any problems with System Restore and my MS Service Rep has yet to hear of any problems with it either, I am also yet to get one phone call from someone saying its broken or have one of my machines returned...I actually just helped a customer use system restore a few minutes ago after they accidentally installed spyware while downloading though limewire....

Its either something you have installed or a program you have used to tweak or modify Vista..
Did you check the system restore service is running and have you changed any folder permissions on C\SystemVolumeInfomation?, Do you use any registry cleaners or system utility software or any other programs that clean or modify the system in any way?

Yeah I do use registry cleaners. I've got two....wise registry cleaners and Tune Up Utilities 2008. I ran them and then rebooted and checked after running each one to see if they were the cause and everything was fine. I do have Frostwire as well. I haven't installed it again but I will. I know I don't have spyware......this I know for sure. I have NOD32 v3, with Outpost firewall with Spyware Blaster and Spybot for this. I don't trust anyone or any site, I scan every file I come across! The only other possible suspect would be a program, but what I'm not sure.

Hi Bowen,

It does not cost you anything to run a hijackthis (HijackThis Logfileauswertung) and just attach the log file in a post. (please don't copy/past)

Sid.

Re: Vista System Restore 0x80070005 Error

Yah, I know about HijackThis but here it is anyway. I had to change the extension to .txt because this forum won't allow the .log extension. You probably already know that, but just reminding you. Anyway, here it is.
