Recycle bin on separate partion?

As the title states, I am wondering if there would be any sort of (even minimal) performance boost to setting the recycle bin to its own partition. Honestly, I don't know of a way (as yet) to do this. But, it would be nice to have ALL of the space on my partitions, and less used by windows.

It is also sometimes annoying to see the dialog pop-up stating that windows doesn't have enough space to delete something due to allocated space. I know that I can change the amount of space allowed, but it would be much simpler to have 1 partition strictly to cover the recycle bin.

I hope that this has not been too wordy, and that someone might be able to tell me if this is possible, and how I might go about doing it.

Thanks,
P.E.B.K.A.C.

Edit:
To add to my reasoning to find the solution for this:

Maybe it is faulty logic on my part, but it would stand to reason that if there is a (slight) performance gain in making the paging file the same size so it won't keep resizing itself; then the same should also hold true for the recycle bin resizing. Hopefully this should also lead to a lower overall fragmentation of the partition, as it can't move files to allow for resizing. I am more than willing to write a guide for this, if anyone else figures out how to do it.

Hello PEBKAC,

Welcome to the forums.

The closest thing to this I can figure is to right click on recycle bin and select properties. You can highlight each drive/partition and give all but one a 1MB size (if you type 0 it will change it to 1). Then on the partition you want to use for recycle bin type in a larger number (use the maximum allowed to cover the entire partition). This sould have the basic effect of having the recycle bin on a different drive/partition.

Hope it helps.

I have tried that, but it doesn't store deleted data on the partition. It pops up with the dialog that the item is too big for the recycle bin. I am looking for a way to redirect all deleted items to the recycling bin of my choosing.

Sorry PEBKAC, Thats not technically possible and its never going to happen... ever.

When you delete a file the recycle bin just removes the first letter of the file and renames the beginning with ¿ (example, you delete explorer.exe the recycle bin will rename it ¿xplorer.exe) Then the FileSystem pretends the file was never there but keeps the data and location stored in the index, It makes accidental deletion recovery possible and also speeds up delete operations.

You can not make it delete files to a selected rubish bin on one HDD because it would have to copy the entire file to the HDD in a deleted state, Its just not possible unless it was deleted on that drive.

There is only one way...thats moving the file to that HDD then deleting it.

Hmmm - a small script could be developed that:

  1. Added a context menu item, called something like "MyDelete
  2. move selected files to other HD in a specific location (root folder would probably work best, as you would not have to deal with paths much)
  3. Deleted them from that HD

Of course, this would have the disadvantage of the fact that, once they were deleted, anything that then got written to to drive would potentially be overwritten, making them to be undeleted as well.

I suppose the best way to implement this would be to simply stop after the move stage, so that the file is actually not deleted, just resides on a different HD.

Sorry about that. Must have been tired when I tried it. Thought I had a 2MB file when I tried it, but....

You can add 'copy/move to folder' to the right click menu and create a folder on the drive you want to use for deleted items as Steven and John have mentioned. Info here if needed: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/89196-context-menu-add-copy-folder-move-folder.html
In addition to being slower, you will also not have the restore option.

Just a little trick (useless but could be useful in your case)
On your bigger partition create a folder named MyBin or whatever, then when you want to delete a file from any partition, move the file into your "mybin" folder (you can add this to the context menu).
Then you can really send the content of mybin to the real recycle bin ;)

My Computer

You can reduce its size or set it to 0 for all to be deleted. You can't move it to another partition. It is a system file. You could get a Firewire drive to outload your stuff onto to free up space. I use three LaCie Firewire 800 dirves.
