WinHlp32 won't install on Vista

I need to be able to run WinHlp32 to make Help work for older programs. Microsoft has a web site
Download details: WinHlp32.exe for Windows Vista
that provides a copy of WinHlp32 that is supposed to run on Vista. However, when I try to install the x86 version of it, it fails with the error message "Installer encountered an error 0x8007000d The data is invalid.

Has anybody else tried to install the x86 version of WinHlp32?

Does anybody have a solution for my problem?

Thanks
Ralph

Upgrade your older programs to Vista capable versions.

Thanks for the responses. I got it to download and install correctly by going to "Control Panel>User Accounts>Turn user account control on or off", uncheck the box and say ok. Then I downloaded and installed WinHlp32. I brought up an old program that needed it, clicked "Help" and got the "contents". So that much worked. The installation was successful. Started clicking on various items and got "There was a problem running the macro 1037". A download is available for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 that resolves an issue in which you cannot open Help files that require the Windows Help (WinHlp32.exe) program says that when you get this error you need to make a registry change in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WinHelp

I started down through the registry finding everything through "Microsoft". However, there is no WinHelp in Microsoft.

Never fiddled with the registry before. Anybody got any ideas?

Thanks

Ralph

Hello Ralph,

USE CAUTION, you can disable your machine in the registry if you don't know what you are doing... :sarc:

Again, thanks for the reply. I should have looked harder in the forum. I found the thread "How to Fix Windows Vista Help and Support". Scrolled to near the bottom and found an installation program that I downloaded and executed. It automatically made regedit entries for both macro use and for Internet access. I tried several help files and they all seemed to work.

Thanks to everybody in the forum.
