XPx32 to Vistax64 upgrade on Pentium 4

I recently tried to install Vista Ultimate x64 on a XP Pro x32 machine with a 2.8ghz pentium 4 processor and a D865PERL motherboard. When booting from the DVD to start the process, i get a message saying that the install cannot proceed because the CPU does not support 64-bit. Is the problem truly that the pentium 4 will not work and i need a different processor or am i missing some drivers?

Re: XPx32 to Vistax64 upgrade on Pentium 4

Hi Kewe,

Welcome to Vista Forums.

It depends on what model (sSpec number) your P4 is:

Intel®

You can use this tool from Intel to ID your CPU to compare it to the chart in the link above to see if your P4 is a 64 bit one:

Intel® Processor Identification Utility - Download utility - (Windows* version)

If your CPU is a 64 bit one, then do you have the latest BIOS for your motherboard?

Download Search Results

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Re: XPx32 to Vistax64 upgrade on Pentium 4

The Mother board supports Socket 478, so no luck.

Re: XPx32 to Vistax64 upgrade on Pentium 4

to confirm, you are saying that 64-bit is not compatible with socket 478 CPU/MB?

Re: XPx32 to Vistax64 upgrade on Pentium 4

I think some "old" CPU are 64bits compatible with this socket (to be confirmed) but i am quite sure that the bios for the mother board won't work with.

Re: XPx32 to Vistax64 upgrade on Pentium 4

Run the Intel Processor ID software. This will give you the definitive as to whether your processor will support 64-bit:

Intel Download Centre

Look under the 'CPU Technologies' tab to see if it supports Intel 64 Architecture.

Re: XPx32 to Vistax64 upgrade on Pentium 4

*Ahem* - I have an MSI 865PE Neo2 Platinum motherboard with a Socket 478 Prescott 3.2(E) GHz CPU - that is ***not*** 64bit compatible.

If you go to Filter Summary and you enter EMT64 as a filter, you'll notice that *all* Socket 478 CPUs disappear.

There never was (to my knowledge) a Socket 478 P4 CPU made by Intel that supported 64bit architecture.
