User Profile Service failed...

Trying not to panic, here...
When I tried to log in to my computer I got "The User Profile Service service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded"
Is there something I can do to fix this?
My main concern - aside from this new Dell machine - is the photos.

I arrived at this user profile corruption after I deleted my XP partition, wiping out all my Vistax86 boot data. I then installed Vistax64 on a new partition. Not surprisingly, the x86 installation was corrupted.

I renamed the duplicate profilelist entry to.bak and deleted the .bak extension from my profile. I reset the state and refcount to 0 and rebooted.

After rebooting, my profile does load, but it is still corrupted. I have a black background, a cursor and nothing else. From there I have to use taskmanager to start apps, yet I am still receiving 'bad image' messages.

I have also noticed that the refcount keeps reverting to 2 while the state stays at 0.

I've also tried creating a new user profile, but that too has the same errors as my original profile. Apart from a format/fresh install, I'm stuck.

Any pointers where to go from here?

Hi Smarteyeball,

It is normal for the refcount to convert back to 2 after rebooting. This indicates being logged on, thats all.

You can try doing a Startup Repair with your x86 (32 bit) Vista installation DVD to see if it can repair it's boot table, but I think it is pretty much beyond repair. If it does not fix it, then it looks like a complete clean install may be the only option to fix everything.

If you are able to, I would backup anything that you do not want to lose while you have some access to it.

Unfortunately the Start up repair did not fix the problem, so it looks a trip to re-installsville. Ahh well.
