Annoying Restart/Shutdown Problem

Let's see if anyone else has this problem; don't really understand if it's a Vista or IE7 related. This happens not on a regular basis but often enough to be real annoying and mostly when I navigate in Yahoo and/or ATT Mail where I have several accounts. When switching for a while between those accounts; first IE7 refuses to cooperate even though there is a connection to the internet and then before restarting Vista I find two or three active iexplorer processes in Task Manager which Vista will not end and when I hit restart or shutdown Vista just hangs there (at desktop) for up to seven or eight minutes before any response. After that long time just "hanging", there is usually a normal restart or shutdown process depending on which button I hit but more often than not I get a dark screen with no response at all forcing me to hit the button on my machine, i.e. an improper shutdown.

Normally when you open IE, iexplorer.exe appears (of course) in the processes, when you open a new instance as a tab or as a new window, briefly another instance should open in the processes and disappears after 1 or 2 seconds and when you close IE, no morer instances should be displayed in the task manager.
When you have as many processes as instances of IE, it is often due to a malware, so perform a virus/malware scan.

I understand what you are saying however the instances of one or several iexplorer processes running in Task Manager occurs when IE7 has already functioning properly and I'm trying to restart/shutdown Vista. I can't end those processes and Vista takes it sweet time before and after it gets to its shutdown screen. I'm running Avast, Spybot and Spyware Blaster along with Zone Alarm Firewall and can find nothing regarding malware.

No offense, but when someone here suggests something it is a good idea to try it - regardless of what your setup is.

here is a scenario - you've been infected with a brand new 0-day exploit that has dropped a Trojan and 2 pieces of malware, all currently not detectable. It sits in your machine, doing its thing, and then when you go to your AT&T page it captures your username and password, and then goes to work - starting to try to send itself to your friends, etc in the background so you don't even notice it.

Then, when you later try to shut your machine down, it quickly starts a couple of IE threads to make it seem like it is doing something, preventing Windows from shutting down, so *it8 / *they* can finish what they were doing.

Do an online scan and see if you can find anything - or see if IE mysteriously locks up when trying an online scan....and when was Avast last updated? Spybot? Spyware Blaster? Do you ahve the latest versions of SpywareBlaster and the latest Beta of Spybot that is more Vista comptible?

The only thing I have not tried is an online virus scan which I will do shortly. Avast, Spybot and Spyware are updated on an almost daily basis and as stated before, I ran several scans on both Avast and Spybot by now and none of these have ever shown any potential problems. I'll report back after the online scan. Thanks for your time.

OK, try disabling the TeaTimer function in Spybot and see if it makes a difference - I have had mixed results and generally have a bad opinion of tea timer, as it has caused my system to slow down every time I have ever enabled it.

Also, do you have the latest beta of Spybot, as it is claimed to work better with Vista then previous version....

Hi, when you run hijackthis, how many iexplorer.exe processes did you have?
Check that you do not have iexplorer.exe in other folders of your Vista, for example in Windows folder or system32 folder.

I think I'll wait until 1.6 becomes "standard issue"; got plenty to deal with having a new machine, new operating system and when it comes to computers I'm not exactly the quickest button on the keyboard. BTW, did an offline and online + Spybot scan and nothing unusual showed up. Thanks.

Check that you do not have iexplorer.exe in other folders of your Vista, for example in Windows folder or system32 folder.

Well, I didn't really pay any attention to that but just tried it again and there isn't any instance of iexplorer as HJT is installed on my machine; regarding Yahoo, I have nothing connected with Companion, removed the Toolbar long ago but do use Yahoo Mail and Yahoo Messenger (rarely).
