Possible to get accellerated Classic Theme?

I would like to run Vista in the Classic theme, but its horribly glitchy and slow since they removed GDI 2D acceleration from WDDM. Is it possible to hack GDI acceleration back in? What I really like is the Classic theme with Aero effects (zooming windows, vsynced,etc.)

I was told that you can get GDI acceleration if you use an XP (XDDM) driver, but who wants to risk stability? Probably about the best we can hope for is someone to create a classic theme for Aero, but that would still require hacking theme files or using Window Blinds. Would be nice if they would officially re-implement GDI acceleration when Aero is off. Might help the uptake on the business side of things since it would allow decent performance on non-Aero compliant systems.

lol - not me, that is for sure - plus, since I am on Vista Ultimate x64, and I just finished reinstalling last night, I don't fancy having to do it all over again....

But I *do* have Virtual PC 2007 SP1.... <evil grin>

Oh, and gobs of HD space....

however, I suppose that I shall have to wait for my XP x64 to arrive (hopefully in the next day or two)....then I can play and see if that is possible, and if so, *how* to do it...

Or, conversely, I could load Vista 32bit into a VM and not activate it, and then try messing with it using XP 32 bit XDDM files.....

Hmmmm....see, now you've *really* gotten me curious.....

I'll have to check my MSDN discs to double verify that I have BASIC on there - ISTR that I do, but am not 100% sure....

Using an XDDM driver in Vista presents another problem: No Aero should desire to use it. Not a big deal if the machine can't handle it, but it would be nice to have the option. Last night, I thought for sure I was going to have an accelerated classic interface when I went to the Computer -> Properties -> Adv System Settings -> Advanced -> Performance and unchecked "use visual styles on Windows and buttons". Alas...it wasn't meant to be :(

disabling the use of Visual styles doesn't disable the internal interface of WDDM at all - it is still there, as opposed to using the old XDDM - in fact, all of the old styles were ported over to WDDM.

I am not sure, but if you had a chance you might try disabling the WDDM service and seeing what happens :P

I doubt you wantto try that though....
