Altered Hosts File

I am trying to change my hosts file so I don't allow access to a particular site. In the process I accidentally changed the extension of the orignal HOSTS file, it is now a .org file and I cannot find a way to get rid of the extension.

There are no previous versions to restore to, and renaming no longer changes the file type.

How can I either create a new HOSTS file, or restore the orginal one?

Thanks.

Re: Altered Hosts File

You could just recreate the file with notepad and save without a file extention or download mine which I have zipped up and attached to this post

Re: Altered Hosts File

I tried saving it without an extension, but it keeps defaulting to .txt, even when I don't add it.

I'll try your file, thanks!

Re: Altered Hosts File

Thanks, all fixed.

Now maybe you could help with the original problem. There is one website I want to block. I tried adding:

127.0.0.1 websitename

to the hosts file and saving it (from Admin) and when I try to save it says Access Denied. Do you know how to alter the hosts file and get it to save?

Re: Altered Hosts File

You will need to give yourself some rights on the file, looking at mine I only have read/read & execute.

Just added modify permissions to mine and was able to change it without a problem.

Re: Altered Hosts File

127.0.0.1 banned site IP

I use the loopback address to prevent popups from launching properly. It should block sites. You can also block them on your router.
