How do i check to see if the 8 gigs of ram is being used effectively?

You would need to run 8+ apps to use 8GB. Does Vista x64 see all 8GB in task manager.

yea, it sees it. . just curious though, as i did a very large disk to disk transfer of files, and i got quite a few hard faults. . . . which is a paging file error. . . in the performance monitor

I get them all the time. I run ECC RAM. I don't get ECC errors. As long as you don't get BSOD on memory errors, don't worry about it. Paging file error? I would need to see the event viewer posting for it. I don't go by the performance monitor on my workstation.
