Whining computer.!

Since installing a new graphics card,...GEForce 8800gt...there is a whine coming from the tower.

Have checked all fans,case, CPU, GPU. still whines.

Not all that loud but annoying.:confused:

it's propably the fan on the 8800GT.. it's not like a fan sound.. but just a noise.. turn the Fan down.. using something like Rivatuner.. but be careful not to mess with settings with that program..those 8800GT's are very loud Fans.. I'd replace the entire fan on it.. thats if it's the problem of course. but it probably is

The only other place a computer could whine is from your hard drive. And if it's not that either... then your computer may just be alive...

Or, it could be a massive power draw stressing out the PSU, and thus it's fan is not running correctly, or it could b any of the other fans....

what kind and wattage is your PSU?

550W PSU. at present.

550W *should* be sufficient for that GPU - but it depends on your other specs as well.

I used a 500W on an older MSI mobo with a P4 3.2 GHz CPU, 3 GB RAM, and an ATI x1650 Pro video card - it died in like 6 months.

hi, im new to this forum so try to cut me some slack;)

i have a Nvidia 7600Gt and thats a pretty loud card, not quite good as yours;). im sure its just the noise that the card makes when it is processing what is going on, on the screen. it gets louder when playing games or even if i move a window round on the desktop. the same time i moe the window the card makes a noise. i dont think that the noise is anything to worry about

Even when nothing is being used and its at rest, it still whines.

The whine is a new symptom the OP has noticed - not a *loud* noise that gets louder, as in fan noise being amped up on heating, but a continuous whine that was not there before.

wsywig - Sorry for making you go out and *buy* a PSU - I was trying to suggest just *testing* another one in there.

At any rate, we know it is not the PSU - so something else is whining.

Can you post a pic or two showing the upgrades? Perhaps it is simply that something new is restricting airflow to a particular fan, and thus the fan is 'whining' as it is running a lot faster than it should....

I've stopped each fan momentarily with a finger, and it has no effect on the whine, I'm coming to the conclusion that its a part on the Graphics card or the Mobo that is resonating.

If you do have some type of resonating part in your PC it's probably being caused by a moving part. I usually (and carefully, with an anti-static device attached) "hold" and gently "wiggle" any parts that may be the culprit when I have issues like this.

Once you find out what's causing the whine, it's easy to secure it and stop it!

It could also be a faulty Optical Drive... May be spinning up for no reason, try unplugging their power and starting your PC.

ah i see....im sorry for being thick...well i hope that you get it sorted...could it be that the sound is being amplified by the case and its resonating around inside...? or is that another thick suggestion lol

It could be the heatsink fans or video card fan. Open the case and listen to each fan or replace them.

I had that exact same problem with my 8800GT. After contacting the manufacturer (XFX) they informed me that the sound is likely coming from a capacitor on the card and that I should send it in for service, which I did. Haven't received the card back yet though.

A bad capacitor can have a high pitched sound. Check your board for leaking or bloated capacitors.
