Advice on Blu ray drives

im looking into buying a blu ray drive in the next few months but i want one so that i can burn all my data currently on all my dvds. Not too bothered about playing high def movies atm coz i dont have any.

I was looking at this one but i dont know whether or not it will write to dual layer 50gb disks.
Pioneer BDR-202BK 4x BD-R/RE Blu-Ray Serial ATA Dual Layer DVD Writer - Black

also if i just plug it straight into my pc, will vista be able to burn to it? ie in windows media player?

Re: Advice on Blu ray drives

Hi fieseler,

According to the product description, this device is only capable of reading and writing single layer BD-R and BD-RE discs. If you want dual layer capability, you will probably have to wait for future developments. Remember that it was several years before dual-layer DVD writers were available after the introduction of the single-layer versions, and I would expect this to be no different. Of course, the cost of the media might (and probably, will) be prohibitive. As regards burning BD discs on the drive, you will probably need to use the included 'CyberLink BD Suite Software'.

probably be better off waiting, spending £150+ if its going to be surpassed in the next two yrs probably isnt a great idea.

Playing Devil's Advocate, though, you can say that about most computer tech - spending $300 now and expecting something to *not* be outdated in 2 years is pretty unrealistic.

Just ask all the people who bought DVD DL burners 3 years ago - or those who bought 4 GB of DDR2 RAM 3 years ago - or those who bought an 8800 GTS 640 3 years ago....
