Problem with Vista SP1 and grub loader

Hi all, lurked these forums a bit as most of the time I could find solutions to my problems, but it seems that I have royally screwed myself this time.

I have (or had) Vista Business on my HP Pavilion dv2670br and I also installed opensolaris on it. I had read this article (Vista SP1 won't install on dual-boot systems: Microsoft) before installing the SP with the stand alone file downloaded from MS's website, but since I did not have Enterprise or Ultimate I didn't think I would have problems. Silly me.

Now I do not know if it is the grub loader itself or the fact that opensolaris uses ZFS. I tried going through the steps here: Recovering the Vista Bootloader from the DVD - NeoSmart Technologies Wiki, to no avail. I suspect I will have to go through a very destructive process, but thankfully I won't really lose much since it is a relatively new laptop with very little university work on it.

Anyways, thanks for any help that you may provide.

    Your symptoms are ...

nothing will boot, or just Solaris, or just Vista?

    Yeah, sorry about that...

Solaris does boot, but if I try Vista it gives me the System Recovery Options.

I am assuming that you installed Solaris after Vista - If so, you'll probably need to repair your Vista boot to make it work....

However, there is one decision you need to make - you want to use GRUB as your boot manager or the Vista boot manager?

BTW, my OpenSolaris disc arrived last week = I am going to install it sometime this week in a VM....

Preferably the Vista boot manager so I don't have to go through something like this again.

But as mentioned before, I could not repair the Vista boot. No operational system is listed when the System Recovery Options are given. If I go ahead anyways (with "unkown in (unknown) disk), the first option fails and following the steps in the second link "bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd" fails stating that the volume does not contain a known file system.

Okay, I got SP 1 to install and Vista to boot after I deleted the Solaris partition, so that problem is solved.

I guess I'll do as you are going to do johngalt and install Solaris on a VM, what are you going to use VMware?

    Nope - Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 w/ SP1 - it's free and it works like a champ.

Also, if you want to learn how to dual boot the right way, regardless of the OS, take a looksie at this:

APC - tech news, reviews, how to and computer help. Microsoft Windows XP, Vista, Linux, Mac, dual-boot tutorials

Virtually all combination of Vista, *nix and XP in dual boot scenarios and how to make it just work. You cannot ask for any better.

They used to have triple boot tutorials there as well, but I cannot find them anymore....
