file and folder permissions?

i'm haveing problems assigning ownership to files and folders i transfer on a user's C drive. could someone direct me to a source that can help me with this?

It's not the files under her profile i speak of, their ok. but when i transferred her c drive data, she has no rights to modify them on the new PC i provided her. and she could on her older PC. (BTW,it's been wiped clean)

thanks for the help, BR

Re: file and folder permissions?

thanks, pretty informative. i forgot this was Vista there for a second, i meant XP.

Also---i need the permissions set for ALL the data folders and files on the C drive. is there a way to grant permission to all of them at once?

this user has got many folders and files on her C drive and has no time to do them one at a time. thx--BR

Re: file and folder permissions?

What exactly are you trying to do with the files?

giveing her permission to modify or delete them. presently she can't, since i transferred her data across to her new PC.

That's odd, perhaps that in itself is a problem? Shouldn't she be able to edit/delete them anyway? Does she not have an administrator account or something?

I don't think the files should lock up when you transfer them...

nooo, they don't lock up. i can't give her an admin account it's against company rules. i had this conversation earlier with another tech here and he didn't have a clue either. i'm gonna break down and ask the lead tech tomorrow. didn't wanna do that (just doesn't look good to get other people to solve my case's) but the client awaits.

Re: file and folder permissions?

I was under the impression that there was an option to apply to all sub files/folders in there somewhere, Though I haven't had to take ownership of any files in awhile.

This is a rather peculiar situation ...

well, i can do it folder by folder, file by file, but i wanted a group policy set in motion---type of thing. group policy is the wrong words but i want it to take affect for the whole c drive. main reason is there are LOTS of these things. not just on this particular user but others i come across.

lately,(if i have time) i do them folder by folder, file by file but it get's old quick.

Alright well, I'm pretty much stumped on this one as well, perhaps someone else will see it and have a solution for you!
