Jumping Mouse Pointer

I have just bought a new laptop with Windows Vista Home installed.

I've noticed that my mouse pointer sometimes jumps around the screen by itself whilst I am on the internet.

What could be causing this problem and how do I rectify it?

Cheers,
Judd

hi Judd, and welcome aboard the good ship vista bound for Windows 7 oblivion!

You need to purchase a USB mouse, they have tiny ones now for laptops and then disable your built in mouse pointer which is probably overheating.

cheers

This is a brand new computer and I don't think the problem has to do with overheating. It only happens occassionally and always while using the internet. I have noticed that the problem can be resolved by either stopping using the mouse and waiting a few seconds or turning off my wireless internet connection. So at face value it would seem to be a software/settings/internet related problem.

I do not have a HP computer, but I have taken the advice regarding unchecking enable tapping. Lets see what effect that has.

If anyone else has any suggestions please let me know.

Thanks

My pointer on Vista Business/Dell has just started jumping (after about 20 months). It is not the temperature (Speedfan gives 49 deg). Maybe something to do with a bowl of muesli that somehow found its way to the right side of the keyboard (but I don't think so as everything else is ok). Advice to buy a mouse is good, but a last resort. My drivers are (said to be) up-to-date. Any more ideas anyone? I am a pointer person and would hate to have to cart round a mouse. Thanks

Sounds like a touchpad "Sensitivity" issue, which can be adjusted (as well as all of the other configurations). What kind of mouse do you have?

I last posted on this in March. Has taken me til now to work out what the problem was. Related to my (2) transformers (bought in Australia). In the UK I sought to resolve the problem with new motherboard, track pad etc, but failed. Then a new transformer resolved the problem.

One key thing for you to check - my jumping pointer stopped when the computer (Dell 1501) was running on battery. Maybe this is a key sign of a transformer problem.

Pity Dell doesn't know about this. Good luck

Does the pointer jump when using the touchpad without the mousr?
If not then disable the touchpad altogether.
Are there any other signs of the computer stuttering? i.e. music with breaks in it or the screen freezing?

G'day Roy - who are you asking? - if me, my problem went away with a new transformer. However, my Australian bought (Chinese) transformers also worked well for nearly 2 years, so maybe they break down after a while. I am surprised that Dell hasn't identified this problem.

I am responding to you because a web search suggests that many people experience jumping pointers, so hope this thread will help some of them. In my case the problem was only with the pointer. Disabling the trackpad may be useful if you are forced to use a mouse, though I never found it necessary. However, certainly turn off tapping, which is the first thing I do to a new notebook in any event. It is even more dangerous if you can't control your pointer. I kept the trackpad active so that I could more easily use the computer when eg, on a plane.

Have you tried the external mouse?

In my situation, the pointer worked fine with a mouse. And with the trackpad with the power disconnected. I suggest the following steps overall:

1. Disconnect power - if pointer stops jumping, try out a new transformer at your nearest retail outlet. [maybe earthing the computer would help also - only an idea]

2. If it continues jumping on battery power, it could be a faultytrack pad or mother board - try borrowing/buying a mouse.

3. If neither 1 or 2 work, check with your computer manufacturer - you may need a new mother board. I am sure there are other reasons and fixes - but my experience leads me to these three.
