Shortly after a Dell technician replaced my fan, I noticed that my screen saver would never load despite hours of idle activity. When I try to "preview" my screen saver, it will only flash on the screen for a second before disappearing. On a related note, I cannot run a disk check. When I schedule the disk check on boot, it says that the disk check "has been cancelled" immediately after it starts.
I seriously doubt this is a malware problem. I run Spybot and Ad-aware regularly, and I have an updated version of McAfee for antivirus. This seems to be more of a hardware problem, but I have no clue what it can be. The only thing I can think of is that something is causing the system to think that it is not idle. Help please.
I have already tried the following:
1) checking my power options
2) downloading the optional HID update (this was unsuccessful because I do not have the attached wireless device required to receive this update)
3) running the sfc /scannow scan (it found no errors)
4) making sure my network adapters are not set to wake up the laptop
Any other ideas? Bios suggestions maybe?
