Vista HDD Space

Hi,
I am a user of Vista Ultimate x64. My OS is installed in C. And the size of C is 40GB. Just 10GB of C is idle. Due to system restore, that free space is decreasing. I want to increase the size of C. Is it possible by using some programs? Or there is no need to do this?

You can free up space by removing old system restore points - here are a few tips. Note - this assumes your system is 100% completely trouble free - I would first run SFC /SCANNOW and chkdsk to make sure that you have no impending issues on your system before proceeding.

  1. Manually create a system restore point - see http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76332-system-restore-point-create.html
  2. Use Disk Cleanup to remove all older System Restore points - see http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76073-disk-cleanup.html
  3. Create *another* system restore point again (this gives you 2 system restore points to use in case you have an error here in the future)
  4. Finally, adjust the amount of space used by System Restore - by default it is at 12%, so roughly only 4 GB of space out of your 40, so that should be fine, unless you *really* need more space. See http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76227-system-restore-disk-space.html

Also, if you really need space that badly, I would look into an additional hard drive - they are a lot cheaper now.

Thank you for your reply. Actualy I have 2x500GB HDD's:) so space is not a problem but I wanted to learn if it can be a problem when size of my C: is low like 5-6GB or not. Thank you again.Hasan

Not really - If you read the second link you'll see it is almost always set by default at 12% - so, on a 500 GB drive it will try to use 60 GB, but on a 5 GB drive it will try to use only 600 MB....
