MS Windows Update

MS is the MOST agravating company I have ever had the missfortune to get a OS from. Browsing a web site when IE shuts down, OS shuts down, logs me out. It had downloaded updates and had installed them. NO warning, no request. MS is WAY to arrogent!!!

Well welcome to the Vista forum jamesphh.

Prehaps you could tell us the details of your problem.

Right off the bat I would say you have either a driver issue or a peice of your hardware is bad.

But blameing MS or its products is 100% wrong. Many many people use MS OSes everyday with no problems ever. I am one. With 10 personal systems here at home and all but one old box running Vista.

If my 6 year old can run Vista HP without a problem you can to.

Post your system specs, motherboard, CPU, PSU, RAM and so on.

Ranting about MS will just raise your blood pressure. And bill will still = billions.

My main rig runs Vista Ultimate or Server 2008. Depending on which Acronis image I decide to load.
Actually I am not ranting. But stating a fact. The OS downloaded updates and installed WITHOUT notification. AND rebooted. I checked on the windows update site and numerous updates were installed today. In fact, when I turned on the computer just now, thee was a tray notification of the updates. Had the same issue with XP before changing computers. Even though I had Win update set to notify, updates were still installed WITHOUT user action. At least under XP they were not installed until I shut down.

Yes you are ranting, yes it CAN be configured to install and reboot or NOT TO...the configuration is up to you. So lets not blame Microsoft when the problem is between the keyboard and chair.

I have mine here (and several other Vista systems at home) set to notify only, and shockingly, it only notifies.

If you have a legit problem, this is a great place to ask for help, if you just wanna handsome frog, I know a few short piers....

Please ignore wwoods post, and accept an apology from me on behalf of all the members of these forums.

If Windows Update is downloading and installing updates, and without intervention from you is restarting the computer, try this:
  1. Open "Windows Update" (Control Pabel, "System and Maintenance", "Windows Update").
  2. In the left pane, click "Change Settings".
  3. Adjust the settings to your own preferences. I have mine set to "Download updates but let me choose whether to install them".
  4. Click "OK". You will need to respond to a UAC prompt.
Hope this helps.

Also, note one other thing - when it is downloading and requires a reboot, it *will* notify you without automatically rebooting - but if you happen to be typing and hit the [ENTER] key, or the letter corresponding to the button that allows the reboot to continue, it will reboot the machine.

Now, couple that with a fast machine and it could very easily have appeared and disappeared so fast that you never saw it.

Another thing that happens is a dialog box that opens in the bottom right hand corner asking you to reboot, or allowing you to set a 'delay' period, with 10 minutes, 1 hour or 4 hours being the choices. On that box is also a reboot button - and upon clicking that it disappears promptly. Again, on a fast system, something like this could easily have happened and having never seen it before you would never know something appeared there for an instance.
