A major boot problem

I have an Acer Aspire 5315 laptop running Vista Basic and 2 days some files were updated,it then rebooted.then a box opened saying there was a start up problem and it tried repairing,it didn't work.i tried the system restore, factory restore thing,no joy. I then DL'ed vista recovery disc and used the command prompt and followed some on screen instructions on rebuilding the bcd,as far as i'm aware i did everything it said and it said all went successfully. When i rebooted it came up with this

file: ntoskrnl.exe
status: 0xc0000098
info:windows failed to load because a required file is missig,or corrupt.

also i get a notification comes up saying cannot find file:C\D2D\images\*.wsi when try to determine UI language

i then click restore to factory settings and i get this message restore failed - reason 0xa0000001 click ok to restart computer

i then go through the whole process and get the same answer.

Am i totally screwed or do i have other options to get it fixed,BTW in can boot into Ubuntu so i can still use the laptop but can't access all the files.

thanks Steve

hi, I have the same problem re "ntoskrnl.exe" i followed your advice to Steve and checked out the link, problem "our machine (Acer) had the VISTA already installed and we did not make back up discs:cry:, is there any other fixes?

This problem initially started when the computer tried to download 3 updates then tried to restart and as unable to the start up repair kicked in but it constantly does back to trying to update but fails!.
thanks
Sheila
