64 bit upgrade

I'm thinking about upgraded my system from a 32bit to a 64bit. I have a few questions. First can I overlay 64 on top of 32? How can I check if my system if it is 64bit compatible? What version of vista would I need? Would I need some major internal upgrades ie...graphics card, ram and so on before upgrade of OS?

As far as I'm aware there is no such thing as your computer being "64bit compatible".

If you list your current specs it would give us more information to work with.

What are you system specifications? If you can list your specs to look at and see if you are compatible.

The 64 Vista would be a "new" install - you don't have to reformat the disk but you would have to reinstall all og the software (and 64-bit drivers). Your best bet woould be to see if HP will give you the 64 bit version of Vista to install (you may have to pay a small fee). Since you have the OEM version Microsoft will not send you the 64-bit version but will tell you to speak to HP. If you had to pay full price for an the 64 bit version I would not do it and I would wait for the next version of Windows before I went 64 bit. The only additional you may need after the upgrade is more memmory for Vista 64 since Vista 64 runs very nicely with 4GB of memory.

The difference between the 32 bit OS and 64 bit OS is quite different from the program perspective. I would definitely look and see what things that you personally would benefit from using a 64 bit OS. It is quite a bit faster if your computer will support the architecture but you have to look at the programs that you use also. A lot of the programs will run in x86 mode but that looses the true functionality of the 64 bit OS. I would consider looking into HP's website to see if they have the drivers for 64 bit. I know a lot of their computers come with TV tuner cards that are hard to get drivers for in a 32 bit world let alone a 64 bit. There was also a good point too if you decide to goto 64 bit, do a clean install, this way everything is fresh. Increasing the memory to 4gb is great also especially if you have another world of virtualization like I do.
