I really wanted to hate Vista...

Okay, not really.

I do not like XP. With a passion. It blows, along with all the people clinging to it's rotting carcass. May they all die horrid putrid rotting deaths. Okay not really but you get that I don't care much for XP, right?

At work I use Mac OS X (tiger, not leopard as there are compatabilty issues with software we use). I've always used Mac OS, even in the sucktacular pre OS X days (okay OS 9 wasn't too bad). Yes I have Macs at home too, and will most likely hack Leopard to run on my new PC. Sorry, but Mac OS put pre XP Windows to absolute shame. Win 3.1? Win 98? Win ME? You're joking right? People that thought those crappy DOS shells were better than the true GUI of Mac OS 6-7-8-9 are on serious crack. XP somewhat leveled the playing field.

I've always used linux as long as I remember too (****e I've used everything over the years - Atari, Amiga, Commodore..), and I actually abandoned XP for Ubuntu, save for playing games. I love Ubuntu!

But, I must say using Vista 64 now for about a month I actually *like it*. :o

There are a bit of things Mac OS could stea.. err borrow. Like Readyboost. I found a 2 pack of PNY 4 gig drives on sale for $25 at staples a few weeks ago, so I snagged them to use for readyboost. It's fantastic, Firefox is loaded and displaying the home page before I even release the damn mouse button.

It's also pretty damn stable. I haven't had a single crash of the OS. My XP boxes crashed regularly when new, esp the earlier ones until everything ironed out. I'm interested to play around in my Adobe apps, as Illustrator has become a complete pig lately, and it's locked up my Macs once or twice (but considering the files I work on can be over 4 gigs in size at times...)

Then again, I do like the UI of Mac OS a bit better, though neither Vista or OS X compare with Ubuntu (or any other linux) with fusion installed in terms of eye candy or adjustability. When I go into something like msconfig in Vista and STILL CANT RESIZE THE FREAKING WINDOW I can only shake my head in embarassment. Come on, this is 2008! WTF!! I think there are some UI screw ups in Vista, though it's interface is better than XP.

Still, I enjoy using Vista enough that I haven't booted into Ubuntu one single time since finishing this new rig. I don't tolerate it like a bastard stepchild as I did with XP. Hell it even recognized my old LaserJet 4M over a usb to parallel cable.

So anyway, these forums seem like a great resource. I have to take some pics of my new rig to post, I absolutely love it. Looking at some of the pics I've seen you guys need a course in internal cable management. :D

lol i know what u mean about msconfig resizing etc. I think they should change msconfig completely in the next windows, i find it more & more useless everytime i upgrade my o/s.

Also, did u ever try vista b4 sp1? it was horrible (for me at least) i had it about 2 weeks b4 sp1 came out & had a mad rampage with bugs & problems. Now tho, im liking it better than xp ever was, although if there was no 64 bit version, i probably wouldnt have bothered to install it.

Yes, in that I used it, but no in terms of it was mainly here and there on other people's machines.

Was it buggier than XP before the first SP came out?

I think today you also need to cut a little slack, as most major upgrades are buggy as hell until they're out and the issues pop up and can be fixed. Leopard had just about as many bugs as Vista when it was first released too, but for some reason Vista got the brunt of jokes and complaints.

Hello SgtBaxter, welcome to Vista forums!

It was just the "beloved XP" crowd, mainly spurred on by all the "MVP" trolls that
kept stirring up all the fuss. To old and indifferent to learn something new.
Scared they may lose their "MVP" status!

Just my two cents.

Later ;) Ted

Actually, Vista pre-SP1 was just as fine to use as post SP1 - somethings were speeded up but at the same time some things were slowed down - I am willing to bet that most people who were to perform boot time trials would see boot times increase 10-20 seconds from pre SP1 to post SP1.

But, SP1 fixes so many little things in the undercarriage that I would not use Vista without it.

yes, I have noticed that, and did not think much about it, except that it was a bit slower, but much more stable. . .
