Can't upgrade to Vista Ultimate!

Hello all,
I'm new to this forum as well as Vista, but my Toshiba lappy came with home premium installed. MS had a program that asked users of Vista and Xp to allow them to track user's web travels to help improve the OS. I agreed in return for a free copy to upgrade to Ultimate. They sent me both 64bit and 32bit versions. In trying to upgre to Ult32bit, my lappy grts half way through the upgrade and fails with no explanition given. I cintacted MS and found I had to unistall Vista SP1, upgrade and then re=install SP1. I tried this and the upgrade still fails...Can anyone give me a suggestion?

Thanx, Cyboid

Re: Can't upgrade tp Vista Ultimate!

So, you manually uninstalled Sp1 from you Home Premium and the upgrade fails?

It might also be driver related. Honestly, I'd back all your data up, then revert it to factory installs, and upgrade.

Re: Can't upgrade tp Vista Ultimate!

If I have to...I find it strange that Ultimate won't give me a clue as to where it hurts.

Re: Can't upgrade tp Vista Ultimate!

I purchased the upgrade version of Vista - and to tell you the truth, I had problems with it from day one - but they were subtle - it would install fine, but then start to go fuzzy in a matter of weeks.

The first time I used my upgrade key on a Vista to Vista upgrade, it seemed to work ,but after that it went crazy.

I finally broke down and got a non upgrade version and all has been well since.

Re: Can't upgrade tp Vista Ultimate!

I have just about the same problem and can't figure it out. I have a brand new, just out-of-the-box Toshiba A305D-S6849 with an OEM version of Vista Home Premium. I also have a brand new Vista Ultimate Upgrade DVD - also fresh out of the box.

I'm trying to do a clean install of Ultimate to wipe off all the pre-installed software and although I purchased the Upgrade DVD by mistake, when I run through the install wizard I'm only allowed to do a clean install.

Steps:

1. Ran through the install wizard with no updates or anything. Install hangs at the Completing Installation point. I let it sit for four hours.

2. Turned off the machine, it rolled back to the previous install.

3. I went to Windows Update and installed 26 updates. Then I ran the Vista Upgrade Advisor which told me that the ATI Radeon 3100 graphics display card would not work at all with Vista. This was interesting as it was working on the OEM installed Vista Home Premium. So I uninstalled that driver and uninstalled Norton for good measure.

4. I retried the install wizard and again it is hanging on the Completing Installation stage.

I plan to leave it over night to see if it will actually fail on its own. I can get a full version of the Vista Ultimate, but I don't think I need to and would rather not. I did not check to see if SP1 was installed on the Toshiba or not. It was ordered on 8/18 and delivered on 8/21 - same time as the software.

Any ideas?

Thanks

never mentioned that part too me!!! lol just kidding

to do the upgrade you have to be in vista it's self with the computer turned on insert the disc and the upgrade should start or you may have to start it yourself.

if you do it from the boot menu then it will be a clean install which requires the full version.the upgrade version will use the loaded vista premium and upgrade that platform to ultimate.

if your wondering why i know this it's because it tells you in the manual that comes with the OS and tells you when doing a clean install if you upgrade you shouldn't loose any files or apps but i wouldn't put any stock in that claim back up everything to disc prior to doing this.

Re: Can't upgrade tp Vista Ultimate!

Thanks for the reply, but I don't really want to do an upgrade, I really want to do a full install.

However, when I start the install from inside Windows Vista Home Premium, the only choice is to do a Custom Install. The Upgrade selection is grayed out, it's not available. I'm not sure why that is, though.

I'm pretty sure I can do a full install from the Upgrade DVD, but maybe not. If I can't, why does it only let me select Custom Install?

If I try to boot from this DVD (Vista Ultimate Upgrade) will I get different behavior?

Re: Can't upgrade tp Vista Ultimate!

the option to do a custom install my give you options to keep your apps and so forth i would probably click it to find out.(but thats me)

the full version is 30 quid more perhaps for a reason it may not have certain code which the full version has as it is not seen as needed.(though that is just a guess)

This was sent to me from MS as a gift for allowing them to track my web movements for three months. I would think this is the full version from MS.
