Random BSOD in Vista x64 Ultimate SP1 - Error: Stop 0xE7

Hi!

New to this forum but many of my google searches ended up here so it looks like a good place for help.

I just put together a new machine:
Mainboard: ASUS P5E, X38, Socket-775
RAM: Mushkin DDR2 4GB (2x2GB) extreme Performance, XP2-8500
CPU: Core 2 Duo E8500 3,16GHz
GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 512MB
HD: Samsung Spinpoint F1 750GB, S-ATA2

I experienced some BSOD related to memory problems at installation, but that has been sorted out and after 15 passes with memtest I'm pretty sure my ram settings are 100%. Have reinstalled since then of course

My problem is: I get random BSOD on startup. When the load bar starts going it (more frequent than not) goes into blue screen mode and gives me this error message:
STOP 0x000000E7. Sometimes it loads Vista (and then it scans the disks due to last crash and everything is fine inside Vista). I do not get this while in Vista, but I have not spent too much time inside it yet. Just installed Intel drivers, Catalyst drivers and Wireless drivers. Keeping it simple until I can figure out the startup issue.

I've been googling around for some time, but none of the tips or solutions seems to apply to me. Most of the time it refers to the 2GB limit or that bitlocker can cause this problem when enabled. As I use SP1 the RAM problem is not valid and I have not enabled bitlocker so I haven't found too much help in those solutions.

I downloaded the DebugDiag from MS and ran an analysis of the dump files, but from my poor knowledge on the subject was not able to determine much of the report I got (I ran the scan on another machine than the one I'm having problems, maybe this prevents something?).

Anything else I can try or is there a way to send the dump files to the right people?

Cheers!
Mats

Just a quick update. Got a tip about removing all drivers as this could be a driver problem. So I reinstalled Vista, but got the lovely BSOD on the reboot even before the installation was complete. Restarted the machine 6-7 times after that and 4 of them ended in BSOD.

I'm not sure Vista is worth the bother and might as well install XP....

Help...

If it's happening with a completely fresh install then it might actually be a hardware problem. If so, XP will go dead, too.

Can you post all the details of the BSOD? If you're lucky enough to get onto the Desktop, go into the Event Viewer and there should be a record of it in there somewhere, probably in the System section of Windows Logs. Hopefully this will give us more clues as to why it BSOD'd.

I have had a look earlier in the event viewer, but I'll take a closer look when I get home. Any other info about the BSOD that is of value?

Maybe an XP install could at least verify that I don't have a hardware problem. I'd hate sending stuff back and wait for new parts to come back.

I agree with you there - as an Xbox 360 owner, I know how annoying it is to have to send broken products away for repair :P

Anyway, I think, usually, when the computer reboots from a BSOD, it brings up a dialogue saying "Windows has recovered from a serious error" or something along those lines, and gives a few details about the error. If it was a driver issue, it usually gives the driver (*.sys file) that caused the problem. If it does, then that can help narrow it down.

I've been looking for it to point towards a driver myself, but none at all.Just the stop code (and some more hex numbers).

Interesting thing happened right now, I sent a request for assistance to the local (Norwegian) MS office, explaining my problem. Got a call 2-3 hours later and spoke with a guy there. He said that from his experience and their database it was very hardware related. He advised me to check RAM and HD.

So.. as I've run RAM in memtest for 8-9 hours and no errors, I guess a scandisk from dos is another thing to try. Scandisk repair to be more precise. Hopefully it's just a bad HD, hopefully...

It's been my experience that with memory made to run with high volts, even if you're not running it at 1066, give it the high volts it wants anyway.

I don't know if your board will go to 2.3 vdimm, but it's something you'll want to look at. You'll also want to look at this: Asus P5E - unable to change vDIMM - XtremeSystems Forums The guys are having much the same issues as you and some have resolved it through a bios update.

FYI, if you find that the board does not allow 2.3 volts, get different RAM. There's a lot of 1066 RAM out there... you don't need to be pumping that many volts in it just to get it up to speed. 5-4-4-12 timings sound nice, but really, your gains are going to come from FSB overclocking... the difference between 5-4-4-12 and 5-5-5-15 is marginal, almost to the point of not being worth mentioning.

I'm running the RAM on 2.1V @ 1066. Stable as a rock through 15 passes in memtest which is about 8-9 hours of testing.

Will scan HD when I get home.

Been fiddling with the minidumps produced as well, with dumpchk.exe, but not so sure about the result so I'll wait with that until I have that confirmed (it said: Probably caused by : intelppm.sys). CPU thing?!

My Computer

I'm not sure if I were in your situation I would be able to conclude my RAM was, "stable as a rock?" Something hardware related is going on, RAM and HDD are high on the list of potential problems.

Your RAM wants 2.3 volts: XP2-8500 DDR2 - Mushkin Enhanced
Memtest, while it has its uses, isn't conclusive. How does Orthos treat you? If the RAM is stable, and it very well could be, then you should also have no problem running Orthos for 8 hours. If however you find you can't, you might want to try giving the RAM the voltage it was designed to use?

Ah, k. Well, hopefully Orthos will settle it. Have you looked into a bios update? Also, have you Googled to see if the board is finicky about RAM? Not to beat a dead horse, cause it could be some other piece of hardware, you just want to rule this out though.

So, here is what I got time to do last night:

1. Got myself an interesting boot cd, Ultimate boot cd for windows. Booted up with it and ran chkdsk /r to check out my HD. It did not report any bad sectors.
2. Got into Vista after a few tries and started the Orthos test that has been linked above. Started the Blend test (CPU and RAM stress) and it's been going all night. It's is still going, but when I left home this morning in was in its 10th hour of testing.

Can I conclude that my HD and RAM is ok?

I'd say so. Which is both good and bad news. Good that you're RAM and HDD aren't the issue; bad that the simple solutions didn't apply.

Indeed. So, driver issue then? What bugs me is the randomness of the blue screens. As it boots fine 1 out of 4-5 tries, I'm struggling to grasp what can cause this.

In keeping with getting the simple stuff out of the way first, have you flashed to the latest bios?

Drivers could be an issue. Do you have the latest chipset drivers?

As for that dump record, maybe you could just paste it in here? Hopefully someone who can read it will see something in it?

It came with the latest bios (v0702), so I haven't flashed it.

I did have a few runs with the latest MB drivers installed, but it had no effect on the startup problems.

http://www.panserpung.com/FirstCrashDump.txt is the first crash dump I had, analysed with the WinDbg tool. It points toward the intelppm.sys driver, so I'll try and disable it in the registry before my next boot attempt and see what happens.

My Computer

I would not go tooling around the registry until you know with certainty what it is you're disabling. That's just asking for problems.

I'm not too worried about messing up the current installation I have, it's my 5th or 6th installation so far, and I smell a few more coming up :)
