You might check with the computer OEM to see if you can order one through them instead. If nothing else, you should be able to buy a 64 bit OEM DVD at a retail store for a lower price than the Full or Upgrade retail versions.

Hi,

I believe the $9.99 upgrade disc is only for holders of retail edition product key so an OEM version won't be accepted ?

Hi SIW2,

I guess not always.

When I had my old OEM eMachines with it's 32 bit Vista Home Premium OEM Recovery DVD, I was able to order the 64 bit version DVD from Microsoft without any problems.

Thanks Brink,

So anyone who doesn't have an installation disc can get hold of one for a few bucks ( 64 bit anyway). Do you think even those who have 64 bit could get a disc this way if they weren't given one by the manufacturer ? Seems to me that tho. you need to give your product key when you order it , can't see why that would be a problem.

I have my disc anyway , but there seem to be a lot of people who are struggling to make up recovery discs, etc. when all they need to do is order one of these?

Hi truee2 glad the really expert people round here, were able to give you good advice about getting hold of Vista 64, just as an aside why were you thinking of going for Vista 64, like if you are going to have to go to the expense of purchaseing a full OEM Vista 64, I presume you were hopeing to get some advantages from it and that would be a reasonable objective, but unfortunately some folks ( company round here excepted of course ) from the media end of things will be a bit too optimistic as regards the capabilities of operating systems etc and I was wondering could it do the things you were presumably hopeing to do with it, like a 64 bit operating system really only comes in to its own when runing 64 bits application software and when used with a motherboard which supports 8 Gigabytes of RAM.

Best and Warm Regards
Adrian Wainer

Sure, for the 64 bit version of the 32 bit Vista edition that they already own with a valid product key number as proof. Well, and $9.99. ;)
